hey guys. i was just wondering what is the proper way to obtain brighter colors when flaming a knife clip or any parts of the knife that can be flamed ( besides the blade ) because when i try to flame the clip it just becomes a dark brown or maybe a little faint hint of purple-ish blue. so if you guys could help it would be awesome

thanks

sounds like you are trying to flame steel, if you are polish the steel first (the vivid bright colors will only show up on polished metal) then clean it so there are no finger prints or grease on the metal it'll look like crap if there are any.... then torch the clip evenly not putting the flame to close, slowly it will turn light plum color then blue, dark blue then back to dark purple then brown, if you go brown you went to far you'll need to buff it off and start over, once you get the color you like drop the clip in a cup of motor oil and that will make the color permanent, its called bluing.

Be aware the clip is spring tempered, and you are ruining this temper.
Remember that when the clip bends and is useless.

thanks spinerazor noted also this may sound like a noobish question but what do YOU use to strip and polish your clips?

Sandpaper works quick and easy if you don't have a wheel.
