The welding supplier has on sale the above in 5" X 2" X 5/8-11 type11 for $1.50 ea. This is the first time I tried them and man do they take off material quick. I going to go down and buy 10 more. Went through the scale really quick and this is on a canister welded billet.
They also had for the 9" angle grinders 9" X 5/32 X 5/8-11 T-27 for $2.00 each. I bought a box of ten.
If anyone coming to the HI wants any of the above let me know and I'll pick them up.

I don't trust the el-cheap-o high speed grinding wheels.

I saw what happened when one blew apart at my friend Bill's. Luckily it only embedded sharp, abrasive chunks in the wall, and not in someBODY.

A friend of mine had a cheap one blow apart in his face when he worked at LS... majorly lucky to be alive.

I'd rather pay $3-4 each and worry a LOT less.

But that's just me :)

Nick is giving a VERY valid point. With any grinder wheel (especially cheap ones) start it in a safe position and direction (if such is even possible) first... in case the wheel unloads.

I have used grinding wheels my whole life just about. If there is one lesson I have learned it is "you get what you pay for" and to purchase quality abrasives. Purchase made in the USA and if you run across a griding wheel or disc that says made in China throw it away before you get hurt. Abrasives made in China will get you hurt or killed, not if - but when.

IG you may have some old stock just on sale - and if it is a brand name congrats on a good buy. Just look them over.

The type wheel you describe is what we used to call "coolie hats" in the trade because of their shape and they do move a lot of metal quick.

I like the looks of that wheel, I didn't realize it was a rock. Of course you have me scared to death to buy one that's less than $50. I think I'll go see if I can find one and try it out. I have a horrible hate relationship with forge scale. Think I'll see if I can find my old kevlar bullet proof vest from the old police days.

The 9" disc for $2.00 are made here in Mass. the flaring cups have nothing on them. Probably cheapies. :thumbdn: But them suckers work well. I know till they blowup. :(

It's okay IG, I don't think anybody'd miss 'ya anyway :p
you couldn't bury him, his feet would keep sticking up above ground dulling the mower blades as they cut the grass over him, if any would grow over him...
you could just hang him up by the forge and use him as a convo piece..
and leave the broken stones in his face  :)

With the stone wheels ( bench type) you have to NOT grind alu, copper and other soft stuff. they will load a wheel and the wedging action can cause them to brake.

same goes for using the side of a stone wheel unless it made for that work..
