I recently purchased a Flash II and love it, but it will not hold and edge for the life of me. I've used the knife for nothing more than opening 24 dozen boxes of range balls (golf course jobs suck) and cutting bar mat twice on a metal counter. This is not my first knife nore my first knife I've sharpened, but the edge simply will not hold. I believe the problem is with the intial grind of the blade, as the bevel on the logo side is nearly double the size of the opposing one, resembeling a chisel-esque grind. Any suggestions? *this is my first post, love the site*

First of all, WELCOME TO BLADEFORUMS!!!! :D:thumbup:

As for the edge on your flash II, I would recommend re-profiling it. Just make sure you hold the blade at the same angle for both sides of the knife that way the grind lines will be equal. Also, you may already know this, but when sharpening your knife be sure to raise a "burr" on one side before going to the other. After you raise a burr go to the other side of the blade and raise a burr (removing the old one in the proccess). After you have raised a burr on that side you will want to alternate strokes between both sides, once the last burr is gone your knife should be sharp.;)

I hope this wasn't too confusing.:)

I have considered reprofilling, I have a grind wheel in my shop. And yes, I know about raising a burr, which I have done numerous times, the resulting edge is just weak. I was more wondering if the faulty grind intially put on the knife might be covered under my warrenty.

Not sure if that would be covered by the warranty, if I had to guess I would say probably not. But you can try contacting them at 888-sog-best or you can try E-mailing them at warranty@sogknives.com

Also, you said you have a grinding wheel in your shop, I just wanted to warn you that it is EXTREMELY EASY to remove the temper on your knife by using a grinding wheel, this will not only destroy the blade but also void the warranty. The best method would be to buy a sharpening stone or something similar, like a lansky type system or spyderco's sharpmaker. Also you might want to try searching the forums for threads with sharpening advice.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Socintel is right, you need to contact SOG, I'm sure they will take care of you since the edge was not correct to begin with.

Welcome to SOG Forum !!

always looking for the easiest solution (i.e., cheapest & least labor intensive) a few months ago I found a Smith's knife sharpener plastic thingie for $5. You know the kind, it has carbide cutter blades, and you grab the handle and drag it down the blade.

well, I put the Smith's thingie in the vise and using a very firm grip on the knife handle and applying heavy pressure.... I drug the blade across the cutters. I tell ya, I was getting chips coming off !! After a few drags I had a nicely re-profiled edge that was sharp enough to cut some arm hair. Then after wailing away on my leather strop (with lots of green micro-fine honing compound) I now had an edge that was arm hair de-foresting S-H-A-R-P !!

I use the Smith thingie & stropping method on all my knives, SOG's and Kabar's and everything.... I discovered a $5 solution to re-profiling and razor sharp.

And of course, there's always the exception to the rule and that is the SOG Recondo: that BG-42 steel just laughs at those carbide cutters.

Cheers,

Carl

Thanks for all the help everyone. P.S. Robbie, I own all three revolvers, awesome knife.
