Flash II dismantled

hi,
I gave a friend a Flash II. He got it really dirty doing some job, then couldn't get some grit out of the joint. He then took it apart, and everything popped out, according to him. My question is should I try to put it back together for him, or is this something I should have him send back to the factory? I've never taken appart a spring assisted knife before and am not real certain he even has all the parts. Also would the factory charge me for putting it back together? My friend is new to knives and doesn't want to mess it up any further.

Unless one of the helpful folks from SOG answers your questions here, contact SOG's warranty department. While I haven't had any need to deal with them yet myself, the general opinion on the board seems to be they're very responsive and easy to work with. SOG's site has a warranty page which you'll definitely want to look at.

As for "Do It Yourself "repairs on someone else's hardware, that depends in a big way on what kind of guy your friend is. Friendships can go bad over things like this. He hands you something he took apart, you find there are parts missing/ broken, and then he gets mad at you for "really" busting it.

...because "all he did" was take it apart.

Two guys at my shooting club got into a horrible, horrible dispute over a Remington Nylon 66. The factory advised against disassembling or even lubricating them because they're "self cleaning" thanks to their nylon construction. *stifles laughter* Well, Guy #1 tries taking it apart. Bad idea. Stuff happens. He goes to his buddy Guy #2 with a bag of parts and the stock. Guy #2 finds some stuff got broken & tells Guy #1. Sure enough, Guy #1 thinks his buddy broke the parts. Wants him to pay for the broken gun. Guy #2 claims the parts were already broken. You get the idea.

Ok, thanks. Although he is a really good friend, I dont need to make trouble. I think I'll just look into the warrenty info, and then tell him where to send it. Before reading your post I think I would have given it a try, but maybe I'll start my knife repair learning on my own knives. A nylon rifle, that's a new one to me. I like steel, but still can manage to goof things up from time to time.

There is a tiny ball bearing with a tiny spring inside (holds the lock in place)......... that is very tiny..............

About the size of a pinhead........don't ask how I know. :o

I was lucky.......I found all my parts.

Call the 800 number and ask them to ship a ball bearing and spring if needed to make sure you have the parts (a manufacturer shiped me a pin and screw free of charge through regular mail). Have fun.

hi,
Thanks for the ideas. I asked him if he had all the parts and he said yes, but I will tell him to check for the tiny spring.

I have seen a few that were still held within the handle hole near lock bar. In other words, it may not have fallen out...yet.

If it is still there, he should see a tiny ball bearing, the spring will be under this. If not, there will be a very small hole where both parts used to be.

hi,
I have forwarded the advice from u guys to him by email. I'm going to ask him to just bring over the knife so we can look it over together. I gave him the knife as a gift cause he didnt have a single knife. We play poker together and he often walks home late after having a few rounds. We live near downtown Denver, so there's some real scumbags crusing around. I thought he might carry it but he doesn't. He likes it, but doesn't have any instinct for combat or defense--then he uses it on some nasty job and gets it all fouled up, ug. If someone tries to rob him he will just give them what they want. If they want to kick is ##, then they just will. He's a killer at the card table, but a gentle soul. I guess I didn't choose the gift very well. I carry a gun and a knife when I do that walk.

I'll let you know if I can fix it. It doesn't seem like he will do anything, so it cant get worse than being in pieces.

thanks again for the ideas,

Thanks for the update, we're chompin at the bit to find out what happens next :p keep us posted

I emailed SOG and asked them if they had a diagram or something to help me reassemble the knife. They said, they dont have anything like that, but that I should just send it to them and they will fix it. I'm going to take their advice as I want to be certain it is done correctly. I will put in a final post when I get it back.

i just broke mine down, and promptly lost one of those plastic washers :(
but i managed to keep track of that small ball bearing.
I just left a message on sogs warrenty line for a new washer Ill let you all know how it goes

Once I saw all the little pieces I knew I wasn't going to put it back together. My eyes aren't that good, and I'm not that smart anyway. I would need at least a diagram. I have it packed up now, and will ship it with xmas stuff going out this month. I have no doubt SOG will take care of it. At least I learned thru a friend's mistake NOT to take a spring assisted knife, with a lock, apart.
