Flash II Lock Change?

The lock change on the Flash II - from the flat piston lock on the top to the rounded Arc-shaped lock - when did that happen?
 
The last two Flash II's I bought both have the new lock. So at least since Spring 2013. The Flash I bought about the same time still has the original lock.
 
Was there a particular advantage to changing the Flash II over to the Arc actuator? The actual internals of the locks seem to function exactly the same, so I'm just curious if there was a reason for switching other than to make the Flash II look consistent with the Trident and Aegis models. The one thing I can think of, would be that the arc-actuator provides more leverage to move the piston down out of the blade's path and so might allow for a stronger spring driving the piston which would in turn provide a stronger lock-up. But that could be an incorrect supposition on my part.
