Thinking about getting a Flash 2 but am a bit confused.

Is one of these a newer version and if so which one is the newer one?
The Sog website pictures show the top one but their video the bottom one.

I've been doing some searching on this forum and it seems the general consensus the Flash 2 is not a very good knife. Example: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/243270-SOG-Flash-II

Is this also true for the latest version with better lock and what not?

well the bottom one is the newer one with an axis type lock. The SOG Flash II and Flash I dominant the playing field in regards to light chores imo. Anything more than cutting cardboard you should use a different knife.

The Flash model on top has the older style lock release, the bottom one has the newer lock release similar to the one on the SOG Trident folders.

Don't mistake the Arc Actuator with the actual Arc Lock - two completely different locks!!!

The Arc Actuator is the one on the Flash and Trident folders - it is simply a lock release for the piston that is driven onto the blade tang which prevents the knife from closing. Last I heard, this lock can resist about 30-40 lbs of pressure, plenty for your day to day chores and camping.

The Arc Lock is the one that can be opened and closed ambidextrously and protrudes out of the right and left sides of the handle. It also is on a swing arm and is pushed into place by means of springs (like an axis lock) and also is tested to 1000 lbs of pressure. This is on the pentagon elite, spec elite, and other similar models.

The Flash II is a good knife for the money, I owned a few before and they feel light weight but are damn near indestructible. There's a member on here from a few years back that beat his flash II like a red headed step child while working in a warehouse and it still kept on kicking.

Hope this helps, J.

Also to add, this thread is recent and he's had his for 10 years: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/840648-SOG-Flash-II

My Flash II the new one, is a terrific knife. The P X sells them and I watched all of them on the shelf at Ft. Huachuca get bought today by a bunch of guys deploying.

I had a flash II i got when they first came out that i carried for a long time. I ended up losing it (sadly) but it stood up to a lot of daily use and other than the finish (got a black finished one) the handle and everything was still perfect, it sharpened up nice and easy, and held an edge for a while. For the price, its a nice pocket knife. The lock one mine was perfectly fine, it was like the top one in your pictures with the straight pull. The only complaint i had was occasionally id leave the safety on by accident and try to open it and nothing happened. Doh.

I just bought a Flash II last month. It is ok for the money. You can get an Endura with premium VG-10 steel for almost the same price. My Blur and Voyager are also in the same price range and built like a brick shithouses. My flash is feather light, has awesome blade speed, has a deep well designed clip, feels good in the hand and is a great looking knife. I really like the newer (round) arc lock, very cool. That being said, the Flash has a reputation for being a light-duty only knife (light knife=light duty). Up and down blade play is not unusual with Sogs. I hate blade play!
I like to carry my Flash II in the civilian self defense role, but I will use other knives for work.

+1 on my Flash II

I've carried it for almost 2 years with zero blade play, locking or deployment issues.

That being said, I'm not exactly a woodsman. YMMV.
