I'm looking for a flashlight for work & EDC.I want it to be small (3"-4") ,but tough & powerful.I need to be able to see house numbers clearly in the pitch dark from a car about 300'-500' away.I'd also prefer it have those ridged edges for SD & a programmable function & strobe.

I have it narrowed down to a NovaTac 120T(approx.$125) & a Surefire E2D(approx.$130)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

I just got one of these and it will do most of what you are looking for except cost $90. I got mine for $50. It runs on a single AA battery and is adjustable from a long running low light to an incredibly bright 190 lumens.

Google it. It is worth a look.

the novatac is more pocket friendly, might be a little more powerful,i have a fenix t1 kinda big,but it puts out alot of light........

Thanks for replies guys.

I'm checking out the Maratac 9290 AA now

Surefire. E2D, E1B, or 6P Defender are all good choices but none of them have a strobe function. I would pick the E1B or E2D over the 120, but since you need a strobe function, the Novatac wins. Are you a LEO or security?

The novatac it nice but will NOT give you the throw needed to spot something that far away, its more of a flood light. The E2DL has a TIR optic that will without a problem reach your target, thought its longer than the novatac its very pocket friendly. The output of the E2DL is also greater than the novatac and has longer runtimes on high due to more batteries. I have carried the E2DL for about a year now and can say it has been a very usefull light that has never let me down.

Some other options would be:
6PD with malkoff M60
Lx2 lumamax
olight M20 or M30

Thanks again for the suggestions & info

I'm not entirely sold on the novatac. I need to light up a very small area from far away.

While I think that TK40 video is the best one ever made :D, it is definitely overkill and way to big based on his requirements.

Lights in the 3-5" range will probably not do very well for what you are asking. The Novatac and Ra lights are awesome, but they are just not made to light up far away objects. You need a large and long reflector to effectively light up targets that far away. If you don't mind going a bit longer, then you have a ton of options in the 1 x 18650/2 x CR123 range. I alone sell probably 15 different flashlights in that range, and I only carry five brands. My personal favorite in that area is the Jetbeam Jet-III M. It is super high quality and has probably my favorite interface. When the head is tightened, it is always on high, and then loosened is user defined to any brightness or flashing/strobe setting that you want. It has a decent sized reflector and is awfully bright, so it should work well for you.

If you want something that is even better for far away objects, there is the Jetbeam RRT-1 Raptor. The head on it might be a bit too big for you though, so there is also the brand new RRT-2 Raptor. It does not have quite the throw of the RRT-1, but it should still work for your purposes. The iTP C6R or C6T are also good choices for you if you want a good bit of throw. The iTP lights also come with a holster and are at a really good price.

TK40 is overkill but would meet the strobe requirement. Sticking with Fenix though you could also look at a TA30 or TA20. Same crenelated bezel as an E2D, three output modes and a strobe. Plus 225 Lumen output on the TA30 and Fenix claims it will throw light 200 meters.

If not I've had and E2D LED for a year now and love it. I think if it had the strobe, it would be the perfect light.

I had no idea there were so many options.

I'm really liking that Jetbeam RRT-2 Raptor...ie:effective range-300+yards

They're pretty slick. I just got them last Friday and am already almost sold out.

get the Surefire E2D,,i use it also too see house #s at night and works great ,,and im practically blind,,lol

surefire e2d proven item. tech. moving so fast. better options probably out.aluminum body can be used as a yara stick in pinch .

are you planning to use alkaline(sp) or would u consider using cr123 or rechargeables batteries?

For work use, I'd recommend a Maglite 3C with a Malkoff dropin and NiMH C cells. It won't run out of gas on you in an emergency and you could put a nice glass breaker end cap on it. Won't get lost if you drop it in the limo. Pick up something smaller for EDC.
