I carry a flask a lot.

I don't think I've ever read a post in the gadget/gear forums about flasks. What's the deal? You guys even busted out ham radios and titanium split rings and "tactical" purses! In the midst of all the gadget fetish, you guys really left out something important. ;)

Here's my question though. How come they say you can't leave any liquids inside of a flask for more than 2-3 days? What's bad about storing booze in these things? I can understand nothing acidic, because that would probably corrode at the insides. Anyone shed some light?

I'm thinking that an alky-haulic came up with that idea...

Either that or the alchol attracts moisture rusting out the welds...

Cant give you a straight up answer, but through I'd add some humor! :D

You want a glass lined flask for long storage, even silver will spoil the taste of a fine spirit before too long. Finding a good glass lined flask is no longer an easy task.

OMG.

my thirst for titanium is never satiated.

but i don't see any flasks? only titanium bottles? bottles aren't very GQ, now are they?

I've always wanted a good flask even though i really have no use for one. Those Ti flasks are sweet. I could always carry water in it.

Does anybody know if the Filson flask is glass lined?

Paul

There are some aluminum bottles similar to the SIGG, from Brunton I think, which are lined with some sort of plastic that made them acceptable for fruit juices and alcoholic beverages. While not really flat like a Flask, they were relatively cheap at ~$15.

does anyone know of a flask that's plastic/glass lined on the market?

I'm really into that Ti one, but for the moment I can't come up with the funds. some day...

and.. does anyone know why you can't keep liquids in SS ones for more than a few days? is it really because it will spoil the booze within?

A cheap alternative would be a Lexan flask from GSI. They are available at most sporting good stores that carry a good selection of camping gear. They were ~$5 at Wal-mart last time I saw them.

Regarding stainless steel, its more a matter of taste. Putting some booze in one for a evening out is a non-issue. Long term storage is a different matter entirely. There is a reason why distillers use wooden barrels beyond flavor and it is not due to reduced costs, especially when you figure in the "angel's share" lost to evaporation through the wood.

Beer cans and kegs are lined with plastic today. Next time you're out, look at the inside of the bottle cap on that long neck. Decades back, glass bottles capped with a cork were the only option besides the local bar which had a wooden keg tapped. Wine is still bottled in glass with plastic boxes being a cheaper option today with modern technology.

Anything that will react with the food being stored, will ruin it. Distillers today are slowly converting to plastics but, most still use glass bottles. Personally, I like the durability of metal cans better then glass and never really have gotten used to the plastic liquor bottle.

I've been looking... all I can find thats glass or glass lined are maple syrup containers! :D

Here's a bad scan of some epoxy lined aluminum flasks.

Not flat, but pretty cool.

I know it seems, uh, highschoolish, but what's wrong with buying it in a mickey and keeping it in there? It's big, cheap and disposable.

As in, "he slipped her a mickey to get in her pants."

It's a 375ml/13oz liqour bottle favored by highschoolers because it holds enough for a nights fun and is much easier to shove down the front of your pants than a two-six in the event of cops or parents. They're sort of flat and flask shaped and come in either plastic or glass depending on your brand. Doesn't leave any room for mix though, I was always partial to a 600ml coke bottle

Maybe "Mickey" is a Canadian thing like "Two-Six." While I'm on the subject, a two-six is a 750ml/26oz bottle.

hm... very interesting.

you're right, that does sound kind of highschoolish.

i'll stick with my SS flask that i have now, until i get the funds for the badass titanium one.

but not any time soon, since this month i blew the dough on a maxpedition pygmy falcon and a wilderness ring belt and a pair of oakleys.

Wow, talk about great timing! My girlfriend just bought me one with my name engraved on it!

I think this means shes the ONE. ;)

wait, wait. she's the ONE? was the flask titanium?

;)

good luck, buddy. :D
