flat and blocky scales

Spyderco knife scales are all flat and blocky. I find this undesirable.

I like the Manix. Thumbhole, crossbar lock (absolutely essential for me), super steel.

I see DNALasering.com has scales that look less blocky, but it's brass. I need aluminum or titanium.

Any suggestions for metal scales that are less blocky? I think it needs to be for the Manix because the crossbar lock is a requirement.

I've been looking around for Manix 2 scales too, but I want Micarta. I saw some cool ones in a photo that looked like snake skin. Seems like everyone makes scales for the Paramilitary 2, Para 3. I'm new to knives so I probably just haven't looked hard enough.

I have seen contoured scales for them, yes. They tend to be carbon and micarta and stuff though, haven't seen alum or titanium that are contoured. I like Metonboss Ti scales.

This is still flat, but has some slight contouring and is linerless Ti.

Hi Ron,

Welcome to our forum.

Hey Nevertakeadayof,

Designing a folding knife handle is always a balancing act between in hand use and pocket real estate. We do both contoured and flat handles, but we've also learned over the years that many of our customers, most actually, really pay attention to the pocket space, especially on larger knives. As you search for contoured scales, you may want to pay attention to overall thickness?

Also, FYI, the lock on the Manix is caged Ball lock, no cross bar.

I like flatter scales because it's easier to maintain precise angular orientation of the blade. The more rounded the handle, the less your hand can feel the angle of the blade.

Yes, a thicker handle is desirable.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the ball lock.

The Manix 2 with the screws looks nice.
