Flat Black Bar-B-Q paint on JYD2 clip

I love my Junkyard Dog 2 but I hate the big shiny clip. I was thinking of removing the clip, roughing it up with a wire wheel, then spray painting (rattle can) the clip with flat black Bar-b-q paint. I would cure the paint in my oven for a few hours at say...200 degrees F. See any problems with this? Will the clip become brittle, or is that only when metal is quenched immediately in water? I don't know. I don't want to bugger the clip, but I do want it flat black...... I also have a can of black liquid electrical tape. Maybe coating/dipping the clip in a thin black rubber coating would be another option. Anyone thinking along these lines? I know that JYD2's come in black, but I was unable to order one.

I have found a great quick method of covering shiny pocket clips is to use black electrical shrink tubing. I usually take the clip off, put the shrink tube on, not under where the clip sets on the knife though. After I have shrunk the tube to fit, I then use a drop of superglue to close the end up just beyond the end of the clip. Good luck with whatever you do.

Yeah, shrink tubing is much better than paint. Paint is almost certain to chip, then to make it look decent again you have to remove all the old paint before repainting. Plus shrink tubing makes clips much less prone to scratching surfaces, tearing fabrics, etc.

I was looking at Ace Hardware and no one had heard of shrink tube, and said shrink tape would be unsuitable.

Clarification would be helpful someone?

However, someone did suggest I "temper" the clip...get it red hot and drop it in motor oil, repeat until desired blackness. Thoughts?

I too am speaking of a JYD2 by the way.

Heating the clip red hot will certainly ruin the spring temper of the clip. Whoever told you this knows nothing about metals. Don't do it!
Any Radio Shack store will have heat-shrink tubing.

Another option, and the one I use, is to get some of the
3M stairtape in black. It has a rough finish that makes it easy to grip and pull from the pocket. The adhesive on the back is some strong stuff and will hold the tape in place pretty well. The only trouble I've had is the tape peeling right at the bottom tip of the clip but a single drop of super glue will cure that! Many hardware stores carry it. I found mine at the local Ace Hardware.

Harbor Freight has shrink wrap in a pack up to 1/2 inch. The last time I was in, about a week ago, it was on sale for around $2.50.
