this may sound elementery to most of you all, how do you grind a skinning blade with large radius. a- do you keep the straight part of the blade horizontal then rotate the handle down to keep the radius point of the blade on the belt. or do you pull the blade straight across. the way i have been doing them is the former. i bring the blade horizontal untill i hit the curve then the handle starts to drop to make the curve. please tell me how you do it

Howdy John, I flat grind exclusively. There are several ways to get it done, depending on what you are trying to accomplish..If the desired result is a blade with a long distal taper and no secondary edge you would want to begin with the second technique; drawing the blade straight across. Establising the distal taper first is a good rule of thumb. When you are working to establish the point and the radius that leads to the point, you are working on a surface that is both a curve and spiral combined. This is best done after the spine is fully established. Then, start lifting and turning the blade to follow that,"curve/spiral at the tip. Hope this is of some use to you, Fred

Pretty much what Fred said, except I'm not that exact on comunicating or grinding, a little here, a little there, lets try it this way, OK, not what I was wanting lets try it this way.:p It's hard to explain except to say that it's a thing of feel and practice. It's not that hard once you train your arms what to do.

You can curve it with the edge, pull outward, twist or a combination of all to get the results you want.
As stated about it is a more intuition and feel than anything.
