Hey guys recently my ontario rat-3 knife has been getting a bit dull and I have decided to put a convex edge on it, but its a flat grind. Do I need to do anything speical to get a convex edge on a flat grind blade or can I just create it using sand paper, mouse pad and a bit of elbow grease?

its my understanding that if you use the mousepad and sandpaper you will get a convex edge, at least i did.

the blade sinks into the soft mat behind the sandpaper and it just happens.......................

I've reprofiled several flat grinds into convex edges just by using sandpaper and a mousepad, and it has worked fine for me. You don't really need anything else, it can just take a while sometimes.

Just use the mousepad and sandpaper, and have lots of patience. this is something I have done multiple times now, but I use a leather strop as a backing instead of a mousepad.
I would start with a low grit, 80 or 120. Work the edge to a burr, and then switch to the next higher grit. I go through 2000 and then strop with Cr0 (the green stuff). Something to remember is to stroke edge trailing :)

I've gotten pretty good at putting convex grinds on my knives with DMT hones. Well, maybe just ok at it, but anyhow.

What I basically do is start out with a bevel that is far to shallow to hold a strong edge, once I get that close to the edge, I'll raise the angle slightly until its at or near razor sharp (do this on my red, Fine DMT stone). Then I strop on the green, extra fine DMT stone. If I do this right, I'll gently blend the shoulder into the first bevel, the first bevel into the second bevel, and the second bevel into the edge. You have to be careful like this, though, as its easy to get carried away and end up with a very obtuse grind. Sometimes I finish up with a strop charged with metal polish, sometimes I don't.
