I am looking for a few tips on how flat grinding is done. Mine are coming out terrible. Do you mark the center line and remove the whole amount of material going from ricasso to tip in one pass? Nibble away at it from ricasso to tip in many passes? I suppose the other way is to remove the correct amount in one spot equal to the width of your belt, reposition the blade and remove the next section and continue down the blade in this fashion rather than one smooth pass. And do you contact the belt at the angle you want ground or do you start out at say 45 degrees to the belt and then rock the piece in to the desired angle?

Sorry for so many questions.

Regards,
Glenn

Glenn,
If I could remove all the material in one pass, then it would be a perfect world.

Here is how I do it.
1 - Scribe my center lines on edge.
2 - Hollow grind the blank. Take off most of the material here. Be careful not to take too much off.
3 - Proceed to flat grind by grinding the entire length of the blade. Be careful to keep the blade flat against the platen.

You should do a search for a thread called:
"Flat grinding tip of the day"
I explained how I do flat grinding on a disk sander in that thread.

Hope this helps.

BTW, It takes many passes depending on the size of the blade.

Barry and others, I've read through a few of the archived posts, and have this statement/question. Whether you are using a belt or disk sander you hold the blade so that the belt/disk is grinding into the scribed edge and off the back/spine of the blade. Correct? Makes sense to do it this way, but just want to confirm.

meteogeek,

It is hard to desribe in words, but I flat grind in the middle of the blade (kind of).

Take Allen up on that video offer. You can learn easier by watching it rather than reading about it.

BTW, Allen, what is your address? I may want to see that myself.

Howdy,

I will try and get a Couple copys made
of the Flat grinding Tape done .

I will check and see how much it would cost to copy a few,,,couldnt be more than a couple
buck plus the cost of a tape.

If anyone would like to get a copy of it let me know, send me an email and i will reply with my address.

it might be just as easy to get 2 VCR`s
and copy that way. In that case you could just send me a Blank tape if you want one and
i will copy it and send it back to you.

Email me for my Address .

I`ll Send one to Jim March and Mike and Spark too.

Take Care,

Allen Blade
