flat grinding tip of the day

Hey Guys!
I am sure that there are some of you who flat grind. This tip might help you.

I rough grind my blades on my 2x72 grinder
(on the flat platen) using 50 & 120 grit belts. From there on I grind on a disk grinder. I took apart an old 1x42 belt sander
with 8" disk and am using the disk only. I went one step further than most and glued a 3/8" rubber disk (not sure of hardness, probably comparable to a contact wheel) onto the aluminum plate. I just cut disks out of wet or dry sandpaper and spray adhesive onto the back and stick it on. once you trim it up your ready to start sanding. I recommend that you use lower RPM's. If you get too fast the rubber disk will fly right off (trust me).

Using the disk like this allows you to have better control and I find it easier to remove the deep scratches that flat grinding produces. You will have to practice with it in order get good at it. Give it a try!

Hey, $.30 - $.40 per disk is much better than
$3.00 - $4.00.

i have a horizontal disk sander with 220 silicon carbide on it, aluminum backing, will this work?

Barry,
Good to see you joining in. Maybe you, your brother, and AT Barr can actually teach an old hollow grinder like me to flat grind.

BARY, your lessons have helped me out big time. Since you told me how you flat grind, I did a bowie and a small drop point. Its alot more grinding than a hollow grind, but its worth it. Can you please explain how, and what grinder you use for the swedge?? Thanks Barry!!!! Michael

Hey Guys!

Magnum - That disk should work. The rubber plate just gives you less chatter and a smoother finish.

Kit - Come to our shop and I will be more than happy to teach you. You can teach Phillip and I how to hollow grind.

L6 - I grind the swedge by hand mostly on my belt grinder. Just like the main grind. I clean it up on the disk. There are sometimes when I need to use a file (they call this fixing a screw-up).

what is the advantage of a horizontal hold, i have a variable vertically mounted 9" disk and since i am so used to grinding looking down on the blade this seems more to my liking, i have seen a lot of horizontal types but dont see any advantage.....in fact, to me it would be more difficult.

Tom,
I don't see any advantage to horizontal versus vertical disks. I taught myself on the vertical and that is the best way for me. It's just a matter of personal preference.

Barry,
Same here on flat grinding but i use a 9"disc. Finish all my blades like this, but instead of rubber pad i glued on a plexiglass
9" disc because it is perfectly flat, then barely rounded the edge.
