Stupid question. Does anyone put a backing on the flat platen on their 2x72 grinder. It would seem to make sense to not grind on the steel platen. Thanks for your help.

Nothing stupid about that question at all! We all had to figure it out at one time or the other.
I use a tempered glass overlay on my platen when flat grinding. It reduces heat build up, and makes for a very nice finished grind. I do keep some of the graphite/canvas backing around, but don't often use it. It has a tendency to hollow out in the area you are grinding in. A worn peice makes for a very easy method of convex grinding though.

Hello,

I use a as Quenched hardened piece of 5160 for my platen on both my GRIZZLY ans BURR-KING grinders.

Also its best to use BUTT-SPLICED belts instead of the overlap joint belts, you wont get the Chatter and Belt Bounce using the Butt spiced belts,,,but you will with the Overlap belts.

I threaded three holes in the D2 plate, and ran bolts into it from the bottom/back, then cut them off and sanded them smooth. Not elegant but it works fine.
