Flat micarta scales, am I missing something?

I've never held a standard Becker with Grivory scales. I've had my BK-2 for a while, but it has flat scales, from Chestnut Ridge...

The scales make the whole handle thinner, in spots. So, it fits in my Armourall Leather sheath from my ESEE 5...

A shot beside the ESEE 5 and TOPS Mountain Lion, all three are flat and pretty much the same thickness...

The CRKS custom package includes the original sheath and a kydex sheath. The original is useless, the scales fit too loose, lots of rattle. The custom kydex is thick and a nice fit, great ride height, one handed removal is perfect. So, now I have 3 sheaths for the same knife.

The is possibly one downsize to the flat scales, I am missing any grip? I'm using a lanyard on the BK-2, the ESEE-5, and others, because my hand keeps slipping. Do you guys need a lanyard when chopping with your Beckers?

they look a lot like the old Camillus micarta in their thickness and flatness

also, would you recommend another user buying them?

looks good to me -- if you decide you don't like them, I have some grivory scales I'll trade you. :D

If you don't have a use for it I would take that stock sheath off your hands for you. (Provided it is the Gen 2 sheath anyways.)

Hey Foxx,

I'm still very new to the knife world. Anyhoo, this last weekend I went camping with my lovely lady and brought my bk2. I have the original Grivory handles on it, and to be honest the first time I saw them, they looked to bulky for me and something that I would replace. However, after using them for chopping and batoning wood in my backyard as well as abusing it during the trip, I found no sign of slipping at all. Again, I dont have a lot of experience, but what I do know, is they worked like a dream for me; no hotspots, I have smaller hands too. Hoped that helped.

DerekH, I've offered it to another fourm member, he never came to get it. Besides that, it's in Florida right now, and I'm not. I'll keep you in mind for when I have it again.

I don't regret the flat scales, I knew what I was getting. My question was regarding the contours, and chopping. I have to use a lanyard on my BK-2, ESEE 5, and some machete's. I can swing harder than I can grip I suppose? So, can you can tell me if your hands slip off the contoured butt of the BK2, when chopping?

since I can only get 3 fingers in the standard grivory grips if I'm wearing gloves, I use a lanyard when chopping with my BK6.
of course, I also use a lanyard with my ESEE6 & Junglas, too.

Thanks bro. I would say the contours help, and I haven't had any issues with the handle slipping loose or anything, but your mileage may vary as they say. I would have someone send you some of the grivory to try out, and see how it feels. Worst case scenario, you end up liking em and maybe getting some of the regular micarta handles or sticking with stock grivory.

I have the stock scales on both my BK2 and 9, and I use a lanyard. I will eventually try aftermarket scales, but I won't buy ones that are smaller, flat or significantly reduces the contoured feel of the stock set. That's mostly because I have big ol' ham-hocks for hands, but also because I've had, and heavily used, my 9 for many years and have never had any complaints about hot-spots, poor fit or any kind of unnatural feel due to the contours. I'm kind of a if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it guy.

It's hard to talk intelligently about lanyard use without knowing how you use yours. Here's a video of one that I'm planning on getting, but the reason I'm posting is to show how I use a lanyard. The way the guy in the vid demonstrates how to use his is exactly how I use mine. The neat thing about that one though, is that it's easily and quickly adjustable, which is real good for going between gloved up and no gloves, or just adjusting for comfort on the fly.

Just to clarify though, I don't use a lanyard because my hands get too fatigued, or sweaty, and I think I might not be able to hold onto it while using it. It's totally a safety device for me. Used the way that vid demonstrates, if for some reason it does get away from you, it will swing to the outside of your hand/wrist/arm, and away from your leg or body, but still won't be flying through the air hitting an innocent bystander (or a guilty one for that matter!). It isn't a foolproof safety device, but it's better than a lot of what I see in gear reviews etc. where a lot of users twist it tight up against the bottom of their wrist, and if they lose it, there's no pressure in any one direction. It just flops around randomly.

Anyway, whether micarta, wood, Grivory, or some other material, whatever I use will be shaped pretty close to stock and I will always use a lanyard.

The flat scales, are not Camillus, but a CRKS custome handle that they do.

Are you missing any grip? IMO, yeah, the best one out there. Ethan's handles are made to be very comfortable, that's why he owns the right to make them. The swells are made to offer your hands a better natural grip on the blade. The handle is the interface between human, and steel, and will tell the tale with prolonged work.

I suggest you find some original grips, there are many out there, and if you can't find any, email me. You should really give it a go, but once you do, the custom kydex won't fit. The Amoural should though.
