I am going to be getting a 42in. flat panel TV soon. The problem is I don't know which one to get. There are two kinds, Plasma and LCD. Everybody you ask has a different opinion. Disregarding price, which is better? I need an honest opinion not one that is motivated by commission like the sales people.

Both The Lcd And Plasma Tvs Have Their Own Pros And Cons. The Lcd Should Last A Little Longer Than The Plasma. If You Are Going To Buy The Lcd Tv, View The Image Before You Purchase It. Some Lcd Tvs Are Bad About Picture Lag. Basically, If You Buy A Quality Unit You Shouldn't Have Any Problems With Either The Lcd Or Plasma.

I have the Sony 61 Wega and everyone loves it ,very light for its size , bout #110 lbs , Kicks ass , two of my friends had to have one .

Plasma's will work better in a room with a lot of light and/or reflections. Due to the technology used to make them, the "light bulb" that makes them work can go out which is an expensive item.

LCD flat panel TV's are getting much better but, I think the technology is still a little immature. Look for artifact lag in fast moving scenes (slow response), view it at extreme angles starting from the center (off center viewing), and view it in harsh light (bring a SureFire to the store if you have too).

If purchase price is not the primary concern, go to the Sony Style store in NYC and view their Televisions in the back room. I did that in Las Vegas and was impressed. Be prepared for price tags in the $6K to $10K range. One tier down from that technology in the Sony line will really impress and save you some $$$.

We have large plasma tvs in our videoconferencing-capable rooms here at work. I'm very unimpressed with the fact that only after about a month of use we found that images were burned into the screens, much like the older CRT monitors. We had them all replaced under warranty. Imagine viewing a videoconference with the Windows XP "press ctrl+al+del" dialog box on top of everything. :D I may be wrong, but I don't think LCDs can suffer from burn-in because they have backlighting. I'm not exactly sure what plasmas have.

You might try checking out Costco. They have some of the cheapest plasmas around - including models from panasonic, LG, JVC, Pioneer. The best part is the Costco warranty - which is essentially a lifetime satisfaction guarantee. An extended warranty from a Circuit City would normally cost you a few hundred bucks and will be a hassle to get warranty service. Costco lets you return/exchange the item at any time - they request that you try to return things within 90 days, but that's not an actual rule.

We picked up a 42" Vizio HDTV plasma for our bedroom for $1,999 and we're quite happy. It's amazing with DVD movies.

Consider a rear projection DLP.

Cheaper.

No burn-in.

Better resolution.

Has a "bulb" which can be replaced for around $100.00.

But, larger (thicker and heavier).

I am about to get a Mitsubishi, 62 inch DLP after much research. These will come with 1080p resolution this fall.

(I have a Sharp Aquos 30 inch that I like a lot).
