I'm looking to buy a flat platen for my Wilton Square Wheel. With the 1 1/2" and 5" wheels it is close to $300 from Koval Knives. Does anyone know of another source, or a custom fabricated deal? I read Ed Caffrey's article on altering the factory made platen anyways, so maybe someone has done that already? Any recommendations? Thanks.

I am a little confused Whit. Mine came with a flat platten. Are you saying you want to improve on it, or have you got some new add on piece entirely in mind. If you just want to improve the one thats there, adding some pryoceram to it seems to work pretty good. Not sure if thats any help....

I bought it used with no platen. I have just the 8" wheel. Looking for the best platen setup, and price.

Check with Rob Frink at Beaumount Metal works. He builds the KMGs, and built the custom platen for mine.(it's interchangable with the square wheel platen) I don't know what the prices are, but I know he can build it.
Parts for square wheel grinders are very tough to come by. I don't know if it's folks just hanging on to the stuff or what. I always keep my eyes open for square wheel parts, and it seems folks just don't want to get rid of them.

Don't know if it was a mistake in your post or not, but the platen has a 1 1/2" and a 3" wheel. You might be able to make a 4" contact wheel work, but a 5" wheel might be tough to get to work correctly.

Thanks Ed. You're right about the wheels, my mistake. I'll shoot Rob Frink and email.
