Flat Platen Problems

Hey All

I purchased a new KMG-TX 2x72" grinder about 6 months ago and I am absolutely loving it. (Light years beyond my previous 1x42" grinder.)

The only problem I am having is that the back of the belts keep leaving divots or small waves in the face of my flat platen over time. I now have a wavy flat platen which is impacting my flat grinds.

I see some people use glass platen attachments. Where can I get one of these? Alternatively, can I just epoxy glass to my platen?

Any help or input would be appreciated.

Thanks All!

Many of the knife suppliers have the glass. I think I got mine at USA knifemaker. I used JB Weld to attach. Totally worth it.

The flat platen isn’t hardened steel. If you have a surface grinder you can continue to flatten it every once in a while, get a hardened steel platen, or pyroceramic glass piece to cover it. Pyroceramic has worked best for me. They’re cheap, easy to replace, and stay flat for a long time. Or find one of Nathan Carothers’ hardened platens.

^^^ This!....3M Double sided Carpet tape will allow you to use both sides of the glass.
Also a few will say you need to put a steel platform at the bottom of the platen to hold it there safely. In 20 plus years with the 3m tape & the tension of the belt while running. I’ve never had a problem.. you always want to release the tension when not grinding..
