flat platten backing

O.K. I give up. I finally admit that the thing I use called a flat platten has me beat. That silly graphite filled cloth has a wonderful tendency to keep this from being flat.

Now wait... I recall reading in this forum about using glass for flat platten backing? Can't recall who the tips were from, but if any of y'all can help... HELP! I don't have the space for the appropriate disc sanding equipment and can't talk the better half into the extra expenditures on the "hobby". But, the glass platten may make sense. Am I just confused??

If any of you know how this works, can you leave a few tips? I have a 2x72 with a flat platten and want it FLAT. Always thought of glass as kinda fragile... Are there other solutions?

Thanks much,

Dan

A good many folks superglue glass onto their platens. I have a 1/4" piece of precision ground and hardened D2 bolted onto mine and it has ground flat tangs for me for a lot of years. I'm about to have it resurfaced (reground), but that is after about 8 years of heavy use.

I believe the tip came from RJ Martin. He superglued PLATE glass onto the platen. What we want in a platen is HARD, FLAT and SLICK. Polished heat treated steel or glass should fit the bill. The glass is backed up by steel don't know what the compression strength of glass is but thats all you are doing to the glass.

I forgot to mention I have a platen with a piece of phenolic glued to it.

I use 3/8" plate glass and I glued it on with JB weld. It is durable, really flat and darn near free (I got three pieces to fit my platen, edges radiused, for $5 canadian.) I've even used it for profiling. I wouldn't call it fragile at all.

I use a piece of Tempered glass which cost about $20 and I stick it on the platen with carped double stick tape. Works well. I did, however just make a platen out of 01 and it is out being hardened. Either way should work fine.

The Vallotons use corning glass for there platens . It is durable and will take the heat. Look them up. 10 v , and 420v full hard makes a great platen also. That gulf club epoxy 80 ton stuff works great for a glue.
I dont care for super glue. It comes off with to much heat and wont take the wet..Had one come off . If you do the steel you can bolt it on from the rear and not have to worry about it.
