Flat spot on 532 edge?

Just received a blue 532 and while inspecting it out of the box I noticed a flat spot on the cutting edge. I honed out the flat area and closed the blade. After opening the blade again the flat spot was back. It appears that the blade is hitting the inside spring. Am sending it back to Buck but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I love the new knife blade shape and it was sharp as a scalpel. I am hopeing the Buck can fix this for me or I will be forced to buy another

Will probably get a couple more anyway!

Looking at the exact same knife (blue, 532, BG-42, edge 2000?), I don't have that problem. Mine is sharp as a razor. Sorry to hear that about yours; they are incredibly nice knives.

Thanks for the reply there spydie. I am sure the folks at Buck will make it right. I also have a 532 walnut coming in some time next week so one way or another I will have one of these super knives.

Ron,

Just so you don't feel all alone, my 532 Walnut (2000 model) had the same defect, about 3/4" from the rear edge of the blade.

It's apparently hitting the locking bar, as you surmised, and in my case it's significant enough that the lockbar, at the point you normally press it to disengage, is pressed by the blade (in the closed position) and as a result does not lie perfectly flat and in-line with the rest of the spine.

I just haven't gotten around to sending it back to Buck ... besides my 501MS is my main carry and it's perfecto.

Interesting that you mention the lock-bar not lining up with the spine. Mine does that as well. BUT, like I said before, the edge on mine is not contacting anything. Also, it appears that the edge could not hit the lock bar, only the spring.

Longdon: Mine was definatly hitting the spring. I blued it and checked it a couple of times. Its on its way back to Buck. My walnut one should be in tomorrow. By the way, my wife bought me a 501 about 20yrs. ago and I kept it on me for about 18 of thoses yrs..
Spyde: what do you think of the BG42 steel? It sure dents easily on my spring

Hope my walnut 2K will be perfect!

FYI: My 532 walnut came in today and it looks perfect...no flat spots, locks up well and is like a scalpel for sharpness.

I'm really impressed with the BG42. It seems to hold an awesome edge for a long time. I cut up some cardboard with it, and it held up well. Subjectively, it seemed to give up a little earlier than an M2 Nimravus Cub that I have, which, conversely, holds its own pretty well with my Talonite Talon (up to the point I ran out of consistent cardboard.. several hundred inches for each knife, and still razor sharp). So, all that being said, I would say it works well. And the 532 sharpens easier than any of my ATS-34 knives (production). I don't know if that is a result of the steel or the edge geometry of the edge 2000.

I've gotta go now, before I talk myself into buying a second 532-2000.....

Hey, Rockspyder, you really should have a back-up 532. I am curious about how my blue one will look when it comes back from Buck

It sounds like we have about the same taste in knives. I too have a Talon, a Nimravus M2 and now the Buck 532. FYI, I just got my Busse Battle Mistress "E" and that is some kind of knife! Feels like you can chop up a tank with it.

I think that the Talon keeps cutting longer with sliceing but the M2 Nimb. is a little tougher but the Busse Mean Street is the mini pry bar and cutter...very tough and holds a good edge too.I still have to do some cutting with the BG-42 to see how it works for me though.

Ah, go out and order a 2nd 532.

See Ya on line!

I'm still thinking about it. I sort of want to wait and see what comes from the "Bladeforums Buck" idea. I'm hoping for BG42 there, in something other than a 110/112 or 532. Not that I don't like the 532, but if they come out with a 500 or a 501 in BG42, I'll be ecstatic. If that doesn't go somewhere soon, I'll probably go ahead and buy another 532-2000.

I didn't know that there is a BladeForums Buck in the planning. Thanks for the heads-up I will probably be interested too.

Hey Ron, glad to hear your 532 walnut worked out OK.

If you ever get your hands on a 532MS (Master Series) let me know what you think. They're as scarce as honest politicians, but the checkered scales make for a nice grip.

Longdon: I will let you know, however, this is the first I have heard of the Master Series 532. I would not even know where to look for one. They must be a very limited edition!

Hey, I went out for a hike over the weekend, and took my MS Vanguard along. Didn't do too much cutting, but I did chop some branches off a fallen maple. Chopped off a couple of them about 2 inches in diameter, and then proceeded to whittle them down enough to make them into a couple of walking sticks. Well, one walking stick, one play stick for my Rottie. When I got back home and out of the outdoor clothes, I tested the edge. Still shaving arm hair cleanly!

I thought that was pretty danged good! So, yeah, I REALLY like BG42. I hope that Buck continues to put it in various models of theirs. My favorite company, using what is rapidly becoming my favorite steel!

rockspyder: Thanks for the report. I just got my blue 532 back from Buck and they fixed the "flat spot problem",however, the blade is a little more loose then it was and some of the polishing seemed a little sloppy to me...the pivot pin is now visible on the bolster but is not visible on my walnut model and was not visible before on my blue one. The blade is VERY sharp and so far I think that I like the BG-42. Time will tell
