Hi all,

I must say, not a bad start to the 2014 Flea Market season. Even though I had little cash to play, I managed to find a couple of awesome lil' knives. The first (according to my research) is a PRE 1977 "WESTERN 628 Bird and Trout knife" (no sheath). Picture in the link (not mine) provided below. This old knife handle/bolster is in beautiful condition! The blade (measure 2.5") has been sharpened to the point where there is almost no Belly but rather a point. I don't mind this at all, in fact, I've been looking for a small fixed blade knife (six inches OAL) designed like a lil' sticker/scalpel. I think this knife will be a perfect companion along with one of my "Bushcraft knives" for "delicate" work. Heck, for three dollars.....it's fantastic!

The second knife I purchased today is a vintage J.K. ERIKSSON MORA SWEDEN little fixed blade (no sheath). It has (a tad over) 3" blade and about 6" OAL. The handle is a nice fancy Wood and the knife has a double Blade guard. I spent a half hour "detailing" this knife and it turned out beautifully! This lil" MORA cost me four dollars. Link shows a MORA very close to what I found.

The "upshot" is......I had a heck of a lot of fun searching the Flea Market (and two more knives added to my collection) for only a total of seven dollars! Bottom line, get out there guys and hit those Flea Markets!

The estate sales I've gone to usually have some nice trinkets and household items, but never have I seen a decent knife. The pawnshops around here are all full of those stamped steel, garbage pot metal, dymondwood handles in multicolors. :barf:

Found an ontario xm-1 at a local pawn shop marked $10.00 with a broken clip. I managed to haggle it down to $6.00. :D

Hi guys,

Thanks Truth Seeker. I am but a poor boy! Heck, I've (mostly) now have to drink BOURBON instead of Scotch I'm so poor lol (lucky for me I'm LOVING Bourbon). My point being, most (not all) of my Knife collection has come from the likes of Yard Sales, Flea Market, Estate etc. Here's a suggestion guys, don't be afraid to ASK (especially at Yard Sales) if you don't see/can't find (whatever it is) you might be searching. Only a couple of weeks ago at one Estate/Yard Sale, I didn't see any knives/tools etc. so, I ASKED the person running the sale "might you have any....bla bla bla". The Woman thought about it a moment and suggested/allowed me to go down into the Basement (I had my LED Flashlight) to look around and.....I'll be a Monkey's Uncle if I didn't find a nice condition SWEDISH Hatchet which cost me two dollars lol. OK, the Hatchet needs a new handle but....two dollars! Score!

Regards,

Way to go Guest! That's another good point....do NOT be afraid to make your own offer/haggle. The WESTERN was five dollars......I got it for three!

I know how you feel in an area full of antique stores and pawn shops, an entire city block dedicated to it I only found 3 places which sold knives. 1st was stupidly overpriced by several orders of magnitude, 2nd had a display case full of customs I believe and I assume the maker had a deal with the owner, 3rd had a small display case with a few knives tucked away in the corner of the store which was out of the way. Found a nice coca-cola Case knife (a peanut or miniature peanut if they exist, it was tiny) which I almost picked up but I like to make my knives users and that one was just too beautiful to use and a bit too small for my taste. Anyway out of probably 10-20 stores I hit that was the only store worth going into.

What sucks is that as a kid my mom always dragged me to flea markets and I used to always see the old schrade, case, imperial, camilus, etc knives and never took an interest in them till just recently. And they were usually asking a few dollars if that for them. If I were to stumble upon such things again I imagine my pockets would be full of knives before leaving. $20 back than would have bought me so many great knives back than it's not even funny.

I'm lucky with my vicinity to Ft. Bragg, tons of high dollar gear gets passed around cheap. Soldiers who don't care, brokers who don't know. There are some that know their stuff but even they let some slip. Too bad for me lion steel/ontario can't or won't track down a 4 hole clip for the xm-1 but, you can't beat the price. Haggling flea markets and pawn shops has become my weekends. It's definitely one of the more fun aspects of this hobby. I've picked up benchmade and ontario rescue hooks, kabar mk1, piggyback and 1257, an ontario afghan, and even a camillus becker bk2sg for unbelievable prices just by shooting the breeze and kicking around numbers.
