Hello Everbody
Over the years I have purchased some unbelievable deals on axes from people at a local flea market in another town near my home town. WELLLLLL.......,
I just did it again Sunday, April 12th(yesterday). In my favorite flea market there is a very fine retired gentleman who has developed a business buying and selling axes, draw knives, saws, hatchets, etc. I had, until recently, in the past been able to get some unbelievable low cost deals on hatchets, axes, hammers, etc., and then he went UP,UP, on his prices based on E Bay prices. No affordable deals here anymore.
Yesterday, 4/12/2015, I talked with the same axe seller and then strolled into/under a huge shed of other sellers of stuff. The second table that I came to had an unbelievable number of axes. A friend, who had misplaced his axe, purchased two axes for twenty dollars. Both axes were high quality famous named vintage axes. They also had acceptable handles! I purchase, for $20.00, a double bit PLUMB axe that was well hung with a quality hickory handle. The grain was perfectly acceptable running from the 5 o'clock position to the 11 o'clock position on the handle. The wood is dark and will be beautiful when boiled linseed oil is applied. I had to sand off all the varnish. I hate varnish on my handles. BLISTERS! BLISTERS! After removing some rust, grinding out broken edges, contouring the edges and preliminary edge grinding and sharpening, this axe was a steal for twenty dollars. PLUMB always gave two inches of edge hardening/tempering back from their axe edges.
I had two hours invested in a very enjoyable project. Of all double bit axes I've owned, this one feels the best in my hands and is now a keeper not for sale.
Please invest some enjoyable time at your flea markets! You will be able to buy axes that will be equal to and better than the Scandinavian axes.
Imagine, totally superior axes much lower priced than cheap axes from India, China, Mexico, etc.
Good luck! GO TO THE FLEA MARKETS THIS WEEK!
