Flicking open a CS Recon1

Hey guys, recently ordered a cold steel recon1 tanto, and have to say I'm pretty impressed with it. After playing around with it a bit, I realized I could flick it open really easily, without having to even touch the blade. The blade isn't loose at all, and it requires a pretty good flick o the wrist to bring the blade out, but is it supposed to be that easy to open? I don't have a ton of experience with folders, but I've never had one that could be flicked so easily. I'm glad as hell that I didn't have it shipped across the border, as I'm pretty sure it would have been confiscated as a centrifugal opening knife. The blade stays put when it's folded up, and everything is tight, so I was wondering if this is normal. Does anyone else have a recon1 that can flick open easily? Should I tighten it up a bit, or is this normal?

The detent on those knives is crazy strong. You must either be flicking it like Nolan Ryan, or you need to way tighten your pivot.

Is this the new version of the Recon 1 (with the Tri-Ad Lock) or the older one (with the Ultra Lock)? The latter can be flicked open without touching the blade if you pull back on the lock bar and then flick it (same as with Axis lock knives), but I wouldn't expect to be able to do the same with the former. Back locks in general, and the Tri-Ad Lock in particular, tend to have pretty strong detents, so if that's the version you have, I'd say it's quite abnormal. I'd suggest tightening it up to the point where the action is still smooth but you can't flick it out. If you can't find a pivot tightness that both allows smooth opening and prevents opening with a wrist flick, it might be a sign that something it out of spec on your knife. At that point, it'd be time to get in touch with CS customer service or the retailer from which you purchased the knife.

It's normal. I can do it with mine which is the tanto and my friend does it with his clip point. It's not that hard to do once you get the motion down. Both are triads...

With a perfect technique and a quick motion you can flick open pretty much any knife. It might take a while to learn, but even lockbacks with strong detents like the Recon 1 or Delica CAN be flicked open.

The Recon 1 I tried out for a little while was easily flick-able without wrist action.
All it takes is a quick thumbnail push and correctly placed thumb.

I have the new triad lock version, plain edge tanto. I really can't see anything wrong with it, have to find my torx set to tighten the pivot screw though, but it doesnt seem loose. Lockup is tight and strong. I found it pretty easy to open in both upward and downward flicks, actually opens easier on the downward.

After examining it closely with the flashlight, all I can see that could be causing it is a very well lubricated pivot pin. I can see some excess grease around it, could this be causing it? I mean it really doesn't bother me, it stays closed firmly, and it requires a pretty good flick to really get the blade out, but just seems very easy to do.

I have never tried it, but i just did & yes it does flick open. I have the older style tanto plain blade. I love it. I just used it on fri to cut up a couch & take it to the dumps. I love my Recon 1. It is my EDC blade.

Also noticed that the back (base) of the blade has the black coating removed, looks like it's supposed to be that way, but since that is the main area where the lock engages, I wonder if that is why it opens so smoothly. Good to know I'm not the only one with an easy-to-flick Recon1.

Hello

Have

Welcome Fellow Canajun..

I've got a couple of the Recon I's a Tanto and a clip point...

Awesome knives.. The tanto is what I use mostly..

I use the lock to open and close the knife all the time.. It's a little less stressful than simply flicking it open..

Rock solid Knife
