Hey guys I was looking at this sword from KOA and it's right up my alley. The looks are awesome and have read a couple good reviews on other MB's but not many because Kris cutlery isn't anywhere near as popular as hanwei, etc. Anyway, the only thing I am concerned about is the leather scabbard. I am going to include a link, and please don't remove it as I am not price spotting but it's easier for you guys to see it yourselves.

I have never seen a sword with a scabbard made of just leather, perhaps it some very thick leather and it is lined with something? It's really the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger right away.I just don't want it to be flimsy.

Don't mind me, I use cardboard and duct tape for a couple of my swords

Leather scabbards can be ok, it depends on how they were tanned. I have Arms&Armor swords that have been in their scabbards for a decade with zero issues but they are mostly hung on the walll and during transport. This Kris scabbard only looks lacking in that the suspension rigs might rip off in time, so it is really more a matter of what your expectations of use are. The rest of the scabbard is probably sturdy enough. I note this sword is not listed on the Kris Cutlery site and you might want to call them to ask about the scabbard. They don't mention specifics on their others either.

The reason I keep sharps in scabbards is safety. I also have a couple of Windlass swords in leather and they have been fine. A scabbard for one of Gus Trim's swords from a decade ago had an odd corrosion I blame on the leather dye they used, or a bad batch of leather but hosing it down inside with slilicone spray solved the issue. Oh yes, another sword and scabbrd that is just fine back to the 1980s and I may actually look at it once a year.

Add a couple of more that have had better days after more than 200 years but with care they will last at least the rest of my lifetime, or indefinitely with due care.

That one has shrunk a bit but is quite sound, albeit someone added wax.

This one is not quite as sturdy and the picture is a before preservation. It is supple and free of tears or cracks but still deserves to be handled with care after two centuries.

Cheers

Thanks alot brother,

I have actually found it on the Kris website http://kriscutlery.com/documents/medieval.html it is on the second page of the medieval section. Although, as you said it doesn't explain too much more about the scabbard.

This is all the information it has on the site about it.

Crusader Sword This Medieval sword style has a 33 inch blade, 2 inches wide at the base tapering to a point. The blade has a diamond cross section forged from 5160 carbon tempered steel. It has a straight black iron cross guard that flares out at the terminal. The long tapered wood handle is wrapped with thin cord and lacquered black for binding and durability. Prominent faceted solid black iron pommel acts a counter balance and is pinned at the end of the blade tang. Total length of the handle is 9 ½ inches with a 7 ½ inch grip. It comes with a thick leather sheath with two brass rings for strapping. The blade weighs 2.6 lbs. without the scabbard. Balance point is 2-3 inches from the guard.

The Crusader sword is easy to maneuver and swing due to the its’ relatively lighter weight and a balance point near the guard. Most Medieval type swords are closer to 3 + lbs. in weight with a balance point of 5-8 inches from the guard.

I guess that I don't have anything to worry about though, I am sure they know what they wanted to accomplish. I have a leather sheath with my coldsteel laredo bowie and it is very good( thick leather, strong) .

Kris is pretty good, and you can always get a custom sheath made for a good price from one of the talented makers on here if you decide you don't like it. Kris has a lot of products that I really like though, particularly their Celtic sword. I want that. Maybe I can figure out how to make one, at some point.

What do you think of this model though? I think it looks great.

I like Kris Cutlery's stuff. It's a good mix of toughness and handling. That piece in particular looks good as a thrusting sword and seems like it would handle well for quick point control against an opponent with mixed armor that has plenty of chainmail and joints.

Scabbard looks adequate to protect the blade, but is probably not the best for long term storage or for carry. On that front, though, pretty much every sword you will get at that price point will have some issues and cut corners apparent with the scabbard.

I think it looks pretty good. Just saying, if you like the looks, I'd give it a try. Kris does a pretty good job for the price point they're at. I mean, it's not an Albion or Angus Trim, but it should still make you pretty happy.

Well needless to say I am probably going to order this sword soon. Would you guys have any interest in hearing my thoughts on it when I get it?
