So I have posted these pics a couple of times before but we haven't ever really discussed striking flint or similar rocks against any Becker knife blades. I did find one thread from quite a while ago but that was it. Like most people on here I am a studier of primitive skills and various camping and survival topics. Again, like most of us I am a lifelong studier of firecraft. Ever since a young age fire has amazed me and I have been trying to get better at creating it all my life. Last summer I started using my BK14 to strike with and have gotten quite good at it and have started many, many fires with it. My dedicated striker works a bit better but mostly due to ergos. I keep a couple pieces of flint in the tin but I have had good luck just using pieces of quartz and other glassy rocks. Pretty much any rock that fractures like glass will work.

Has anyone else here tried it with a Becker or another knife? Share whatever you can. Tips, tricks or just experiences and of course pictures are always great. If you just have a question then that is great too. Here is my BK14 with my char tin and a pic of it's chewed up spine.

I'll upload pics in morning... I use by bk 14 probably at least 1 a month to strike quartz, flint, or chert.... I'm mobile so I'll upload in the morn.... but yeah my 14s spine looks like someone was spine whacking the crap out of it lol.....

I have done this with my BK-14. I have had the best luck with quartz. Now I use my Esee striker so I don't have to mess with a sharp blade.

You should do a demo of the flint and steel with a Becker at the gathering bearfacedkiller. I am sure others would like to learn.

No problem. I'll bring the bk14 and my striker. I'm always happy to share. I agree that I usually use my striker for safety reasons but it is nice knowing that you can do it with your knife in a pinch.

Thanks of sharing guys.

I highly recommend learning this skill great tool for the next fire mentality because you do need charcloth (punk wood tinder fungus and other materials do work just not as well as char cloth)

My spines along with a fire piston (highly recommend the Vulcan by numyth)

I just strike right into the tin that is full of charcloth

Got an ember goin

Do you find any difference between the Mora and the Bk14? I haven't done it with my Mora.

Looks like you have a whole in your tin. Mine does not. I have not noticed a difference one way or the other. The smoke just rolls out the edges of the tin since it isn't very airtight. Do you think it makes a difference?

Thanks for the pics!

Sure! I find I get better sparks off my Becker however this maybe because I have more practice with it. I did find in some extreamly unscientific studies ;) that the whole in the tin speeds it up again this all extreamly unscientific and may of happened because of conditions when experiment was executed

I have 5ish tins I use to make one big batch every now and then and 3 of them have wholes in the top so I'll try again and see the results
