Hello,

I can light my fire with flint, steel and char cloth without big problems.

Today I tried it with a new Mora carbon steel knife with the same flint, but it is impossible to get a spark. The only result is, that the knife got a lot of scratches:mad:

Has anybody success with a Mora carbon steel knife and a flint?

Best regards,

GREAT video!:)

I see that you use a Mora 740 which was former Frosts. I've tried it with a KJ Eriksson. Maybe this makes the difference? Do you have filed the spine on your 740 to make it smoother?

Yes I filed it, but it gets tore up from the flint.

Following your advices, I filed the spine and was able to get sparks. These sparks a much weaker than the sparks from my dedicated fire steel, but I will try it with a piece of char cloth later on.

Many thanks to all!

+1 for filing the spine. It will help ALOT.

Today I tried it again with my carbon steel Mora an other flint. Now I get much more intensive sparks!

Lesson learned:
1. File the spine of your knife if you want to use it with a flint.
2. Be aware that the spine of your knife will wear off a lot. A no go for expensive knives!
3. Dedicated fire steels seem to be harder and work better than the softer knife spines.
4. If you get weak sparks, try an other flint.

Happy fire making with flint and steel! Again, thank you very much for your help!

As with any flint and steel attempts, the flint should have the sharpest edge possible. Just knap it back a little from time to time.
