Need some advice to make life easier; tried my flint/steel from DGW this afternoon, and couldn't buy fire! I have musket flints and a 'c' striker throwing sparks into flax tow . . . I know I want a larger flint, as this one's too small to hold securely. The striker throws good sparks when I can hit it right, but that's iffy. Still, sparks went into the tow and just fizzled, not even smoke . . should I have the tow bundled tight or loose? Does it matter?

Make up some charcloth out of 100% cotton material (I like denim jeans). That should help your spark ... then add some flax and blow it into flame.

Yeah, making char-cloth was on my agenda, once I got the fire going! I was mostly being stubborn about starting it "period"; seemed like the tow was getting sparks, but they weren't doing much - does the char cloth start easier than the tow?
