flipper action on junkyard dog

I posted earlier that my wife bought a junk yard dog. She loves it! Should she be able to open it fully using the flipper only? It comes open just fine with the flipper plus a little flick of the wrist. I put some breakfree on it and it loosened up a little. Anything else I can do or is this as good as it gets?

try preloading....basically you push up and in on the flipper, away from the direction it would go if you were opening the knife...this adds some potential energy to the mechanism, then when you flip, it will fly out and lock up smooth.

hope this helps

Time and practice will help too.

I love mine, and am able to flip it out one-handed almost every time. I add just a little flick of the wrist to make sure.

I handled a brand new one today in a knife store (where I was trying to get a R.A.M., but that's a different thread). I was surprised at how much harder the new one was to open compared to my well broken-in JYD.

Time and practice are the best things, I think.

works perfect for me every time... no wrist. Not sure what I do, but hope that helps ;)

.... practice.

Instead of placing your index finger on the flipper and preloading your finger then pulling down, place your finger on the scales just above the flipper. To give you an idea of where to place your index finger, look at the pivot screw as if it were a clock. The tip of your index finger would be in the 1 O'Clock position above the pivot screw on the top part of the handle. Just give it a good flick downward toward the flipper. I found that this gives an easier and more authoritative snap and lockup.
Works everytime.

hmm no preloading....interesting. maybe thats why both my flipper fingers are so sore from my SG2 JYDII and on this day of all days (ram arrival day). cool tip

ok, after a little more practice and breakfree clp, it opens very nice. i kinda love that knife. i just wish it were bigger. it don't fit into my meathooks so well. guess i need to go get a JYD II composite! i kinda love the design even though it doesn't have speedsafe. I used to tell people that speedsafe and ken onion drug me away from other knife brands. Now I have to say speedsafe, ken onion, and tim galyean!:thumbup:

I have a question, can you make one that is well broken in flip open with any kind of a hard wrist snap, or snap and twist? I ask, because my main folder I carry, you can do this, almost no matter how tight I make the main screw. If I make it tight enough to keep this from happening, then is almost impossible to open it one handed with the thumb stud. This makes it a "gravity knife" under the laws here. I don't think I will ever have a problem with the police with it, but you never know when you are going to run into that one jerk super cop.

just to warn you. the many variations that the JYD II have can become problematic once you've handled one. i have three JYD IIs and will get a composite next. the titanium is fabulous and an addictive flipper. also it is a perfect size :)
