How about an Olamic Wayfarer? 4" blade, and a little birdie told me there is a 3.5" version planned for fall!

Or something from ZT, like the 0562 (not out yet), they have plenty of flippers.

The spyderco Southard is another one, or even Brous blades has some flippers.

Without a budget limit, the options are unlimited!

Just received my Domino back after sketchen installed his ironwood burl scale (which by the way is absolutely outstanding). Before I sent it to him my flipper deployment left a little something to be desired, but he put some blue loctite on it and now it's perfect. Highly recommend the Domino even with its standard "Bill Cosby sweater" scale. :D

Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic but I am photographically challenged.

Thanks man! Sketchen does phenomenal work! I liked the Domino before but I love it now.

Production:

Spyderco:
Southard
Domino
Dice

ZT:
056x series
0801
0350
0200
030x
0770
0777
0888
Kershaw:
Leek
Scallion
Skyline
Cryo I and II
Thermite
Scrambler
Manifold
just to name a few

CRKT has knives with flippers, I'm just not a fan of the brand so I don't know the names of their offerings.

Brous (semi-production)
Bionic
T4
Division and mini-division
Silent Soldier flipper

Hinderer

Kizer

If you go custom, I like Brian Tighe's flippers a lot. I'm not that well versed in custom's with flippers so others can help you out there.

I have:
ZT0801--Amazingly smooth
Brian Tighe mini Tighe Rod--very nice
Brous Bionic (strong detent, pointy flipper, but if you have tough fingers its awesome.
Kizer 3404-- very nice as well for not being on bearings like the other three.

I've owned or at least played with:
Spyderco Southard: Not impressed with the shape of the flipper and the action.
Kershaw Leek--not really an a/o fan.
Kershaw Scallion-see above
ZT0350-Not a fan of a/o, deassisted it was ok, just not an overbuilt folder fan.

Just a small list to go by. Good luck.

I apologize for repeating the same thing others have said, but i could not keep quiet. I fell in love with the Spyderco domino flipper in blue. I actually found this thread while searching for domino's for sale. I have not tried it with any custom scales (btw that pic above is bitchin) I would definitely go for a domino, i have played with quite a few flippers in my day and the domino stood out. I'm waiting to find a domino in be carbon, and find some custom blue ano standoffs, then my dream will be realized.

If money is no option to you (that is INDEED dangerous ;)), then I would recommend a Shirogorov. My 95 is the best flipper I've ever owned, and in terms of performance, it blows everything else out of the water, even when its in the price range it is. If you're ever looking for a sebenza in a flipper, you aren't going to get closer, even if it is a jump in price.
In the lower price ranger, the 0560, spyderco southard, and even some of the Dendra offerings are good choices.

Best flippers, in my experience - Spyderco Southard and ZT 0801. Or you could put in a pre-order for an 0562 or 0562CF :D

For something unique and interesting, I just picked up a Kershaw Zing and OD-1, both in orange. Great flipping action on both, and perfect for EDC and light use. They're not the easiest to find, but the hunt adds to the fun!

The South African knife makers are getting quite the rep nowadays. Especially the 3 Andre's. From what I have heard, Thorburn's knives have some of the best and smoothest flipping action around and Van Heerden is right behind him

I've just been through this, and handled all of these and more at a superstore last week (SMKW). I have either already purchased these or plan to purchase one or more from each manufacturer - i.e. I would have no hesitation recommending them.

Kershaw:
Leek (3" - assisted)
Shallot (3.5" - assisted)

Zero Tolerance:
0566 (3.25")
0560 (3.75")
0801 (3.5")

Spyderco:
Dice (2.5")
Domino (3.1")

SOG:
Twitch II (2.6" - assisted)
Twitch XL (3.25" - assisted)
Vulcan Mini (3")
Vulcan (3.5")

CRKT:
Nirk Tighe (3.8")
Nirk Tighe 2 (3.25")

I currently have the twitch II and vulcan mini and these are great knives (esp the Vulcan). I don't understand the uniform hate for all SOG models here - my examples of the Twitch and Vulcan Mini have no blade play and the fit/finish are truly excellent for the price point. I have felt some of the issues in their other stuff (i.e. the Trident which my son just *had* to have b/c of the seatbelt/cord cutting notch) but their VG10 Japanese knives in particular are in a separate class IMO. Also note that the Tanto blade Vulcans are made of Seki San Mai steel (VG10 core/cutting edge) which is a really cool and unique offering.

I had a full size Vulcan. It flipped like shit. It had almost no detent whatsoever. I once tossed it on my bed and put a bit of a spin on it as I let go. The blade deployed just from the centripetal force. I still liked the knife up until I lost it. I replaced it with a Benchmade and haven't looked back since.

Did you handle the southard?
If so what didn't you like about it?

I had a southard and really liked it. Only 2 complaints. The flipping action isn't the best but can be done quite reliably with practice. The only other thing I didn't like was the pocket clip. It's very pointy and bordering on sharp. Scratched my hand quite a few times. Other than that I really liked the size, shape, and blade steel

Northern - to each their own. I handled all of these and the Vulcan Mini is the one I walked out of the store with for my son. Personally I love the light action - that plus the badass Seki Japan steel blade at <$100 seemed like a fine value to me. I understand they may not be for everybody. But to hear people talk you would think they are all garbage. That's crazy talk. TBH, I really wanted the ZT but couldn't get the 2 bills out of my pocket that day, as I was already 4 in the hole on gifts ;-)

Benchmade are very nice. Do they have a flipper? I have not seen one.

Cold Steel is another brand you hear people telling SOG customers to switch to, but again I didn't see a flipper - they do have smooth action and a good lock mechanism but that's about it. Otherwise I found subpar ergonomics, ho-hum materials, and China construction. Meh.

Again, to each their own.
