Flipper Question

I’m going to buy a flipper (or maybe two). As I look at them, two common, modestly priced examples are the ZT 0450 and the Benchmade 320. There’s also a good number of flippers available in the $250-$400 range from ZT and others, and many of those look tempting. A question for those with experience/knowledge beyond mine (which is probably everybody)... Would it be better for me to put ~$300 into a ZT 0450 and a BM 320 or into one clearly better quality flipper?

You should skip the benchmade 320 altogether zt makes a bunch of nice flippers so does kizer (if you buy models that have been out for a bit you can get them fairly cheap), if you want to get just one maybe look at WE or Reate both make nice higher end stuff

Try a real Steel Megalodon in m390. They have a 2018 eclipse model and a 2017 and both are great flippers for a lower price. The quality of these are on par. While real Steel isn't known for quality, real Steel say they put more quality focus into these Megalodon models. 4" knives but it carries small.

You don’t need to spend a lot to get a great flipper. Check out the Kizer Vanguard Dukes. Personally, I prefer a liner lock to a frame lock on a flipper.

What are you looking for in a flipper? The 0450 is a pretty safe choice overall. Personally I would say if you can stretch your budget, go for a Reate. Valhalla, K Series, New Torrent, Hills, pick your flavor, no bad choices.

The 0450 is a great choice. If you can find a limited edition version, so much the better. But certainly pricier and more exclusive.

The 0450 is a modern classic. It’s my gateway knife and still gives me pride of ownership each time I carry it. It’s one of my all time favorites, and I should probably pick up a spare for deep storage. Some people dislike the ergos, but it’s fine for me.

I’m not a huge Benchmade fan, although they do have some nice designs.

My advice, buy the 0450 and enjoy it for a while. Take whatever extra disposable cash you have and stash it away. The “next knife” will find you at some point. Maybe it’ll wind up being the BM, or maybe not. Your experience with the 0450 may shape what you’re looking for next time.

If you can’t get hands-on an 0450 before buying, pick an online shop with a good return/exchange policy. You’ll know immediately if you’re one of the folks that dislike the 0450 ergos.

A zt will give you everything you want out of a knife that’s a flipper. Pick one that appeals to you.

ZT over the Benchmade...my opinion if you want a better flipper.

ZT 0450 = $160
ZT 0562 = $200
ZT 0609 = $220
Kizer Basalt = $170
Kizer Gemini = $170

Those are some great flippers well under that $300 mark, and the Real Steel Megalodon is a very good choice, as well.

If you stretch your budget, a Reate Wave has been called a good alternative to a Shirogorov, which is very high praise.

If you get a zt, spine whack it lightly. If it fails return it for another one. They've been having this issue for a while.

And if you some how get a benchmade buy it in person so you can inspect there lot and get the best one. Well known for poor qc. Else ask the vendor to inspect though not all vendors know what to look for.
