Carson and Onion everyone knows..but what about Phil B's Cobra...I have never felt such a smooth action and positive lock on this type of knife..lockup is solid as a tank and ZERO blade play..and the opening is fasssssst...not a speedsafe but it jumps out the handle..incredible how he is able to do it..there are actually what i call internal thumb studs, acting as a blade stop, inside the bolsters..additionally, the orange peel finish on the bolsters and the jeweling of the liners are incredible.. just my opinion..

I had one of those Underdog, sold it and used that money towards knifemaking equipment. Fantastic knife. Smoooooooooth, and then some. You just can't stop playing with it. Phil B. puts an incredible amount of precision into those knives. Very good deal for the money.

That is a beautiful knife. I love Phil's work and everytime I see his pieces it makes me want one. Is the internal thumbstud what I'm seeing in the pic as a dark dot just next to the bolster?

no..that is a small hole in the blade to maybe give it a small flow valve..this thing is absolutley incredible..i don't know how he gets the opening to go so smooth and strong..it is as fast as the speedsafe but has a more positive lock once open..

other makers who use/used flippers:

Mel Pardue

Randall Gilbreath

Kit Carson

Ken Onion

Phil Boguszewski

Brian Tighe

Darrel Ralph.

In the future look for knives with flippers from:

Jim Hammond and Greg Lightfoot

Im sure there will be others.

Hey Les, is the flipper a patented thing or can anyone use them? I am thinking of a Tom Mayo TnT XL Flipper

Add Randy Gilbreth to the list.

Hehehe...

Gus, Les already Did!

The first 'flipper' I ever saw was Randall Gilbreath's design. At the time (5 years ago) he was one of the few knifemakers doing 'flippers'.

Tim Herman also uses this 'mechanism'.

It makes for a very fast openings and is a 'clean' design (no stud or hole required).

LOL Thanks para! sorry about that Les.

Obviously blind and in a hurry.

I don't think there is a patent on it. The first one I ever saw was by Mel Pardue probably a Decade ago, and he showed Gilbreath how to do it.

So I don't see why Tom could not do a TNT with one.

Personally, I like the idea of the flipper.

Two of the new knives for my Vanguard series now have Flippers, Darrel Raplph and Brian Tighe.

Others later this year will be Jim Hammond, Greg Lightfoot and Kit Carson.

Someone asked me at the Blade Show about flippers. I told them come to the Blade Show in 2003 and you will see dozens of makers using this.

If I am not mistaken I had a toggle lock by Randall that used the flipper. Seems like I picked this up from him at the Blade Show in Knoxville in the early 90's. The toggle lock was an idea of Randall's or was it someone else? I think I remember there was some "bad-blood" between Randall and the other maker over the toggle lock idea.

I also had one of the Cobra's by Phil B. but sent it back as it was too small for me. Nothing at all against the knife as it was everything you said it was UD, I just like a bigger blade. Of course I see now that Phil makes a King Cobra. That would probably be more to my liking!
