So, I pulled out an old tube of Flitz metal polish I had stored in my closet. I used it a few days ago to spiff up a little knife I had given my mom that ended back in my hands when she recently passed. Well, I know I has 3 tubes.. but since this stuff goes a long way, I still have quite a bit left in this last tube. How old is it?... When did I buy it?... Quite a while, for sure.... Don't believe me?.... Look at the pic of it above... made in WEST GERMANY!!!! lol! :-)

Not sure why a metal polish would tend to decay unless you left the cap off and it dried out. You'd better post some pics of traditional knives in this thread pretty quick or it's going to get moved over to the Maintenance forum.

Oh.. well, if it gets moved, or discarded, that's fine. I know that many trad knives have carbon steel blades, and with recent talk about such things as rust.. well, just thought you'd all get a kick out'a the old west german Flitz... but all good any way... meant no foul :-)

Just put up some before/after shots and all will be well. :) I find that the polishes work really well on the bolsters, and for taking patina off of carbon steel (or toning it down a bit) but for stainless I have to go with buffing compounds if I want to see any real difference.

Germany was officially 'reunified' as one, in October 1990. So, that tube came sometime before that. In my 52-year-old eyes, it doesn't seem that old. :D

Not a lot to go 'bad' in polishing paste like this. The aluminum oxide abrasive will last forever; dispensing it may be an issue if/when the petroleum & ammonia-based suspension dries up. But even then, if one were determined about it, the abrasive grit left over will still polish as effectively as ever, if you can get it out of the tube.

Maybe a couple decades old Flitz... not as old as I thought. Oh well, maybe it's my own 47 (almost 48) years of age that is old! ;-)

Ahh.... just noticed something! I did not know what was this knife's pattern closest to it being (I was leaning towards it being Toothpick like)... Well, now I am thinking more like my new Laguiole knife... well, kinda sorta! lol! ;-)

Thanks for the before and after pics - now I know what my results should be like with some incoming Flitz.

Hmmmm - Laguiole fever!

Hahaha.... I like that darned Laguiole I just got... BUT, am gonna try to not start heading to buy any more (though maybe another one or two in the future).... I want to keep the diversity going... have not settled on my next pattern yet :-)
