Ray demos his method of cleaning and touching up blades. He uses a roll of tightly rolled newspapers (tied) with some oil. It works! With help like Ray all Uncle Bill has to do is stand back and watch and drink Heineken.

Ray it would be really nice if you could describe your way of doing this for those of us who weren't there here on the forum.
I like being able to recycle things in a manner such as this sounds.
And it could be easier and simpler than what I usually do now.

Do you have any trouble with the newspaper ink rubbing off on the khuk, Ray? Does the oil help prevent that somehow? I'd also be interested in learning the specifics of this technique.

Hello all have been sick all week just resting now.Hope Bill or Yangdu don't get any of this.
The rolled up news paper or ink has no efect on anything. You just use it to apply metal creams or use it to put more pressure behine steel wool or sand paper. You can put as much pressure as the surface that you have the knife on can hold. With the roll you can get to the edge and run along it in safety. There is no heat, when the end gets too dirty you just slice a piece off and it's clean.
Just rool up the paper tight and use masking tape to hold the roll together and cut it in 6 or 8 inch lengths, hold it like you have a dagger in reverse grip move circular or back and forth what ever.Bits of it will shave off but your skin won't.Easy to make or toss in a small zip lock bag with some flitz and stash in you gear anywhere.

I got this idea from my MA training we would use things around us for weapons;a rolled news paper or magazine won't make a good club but it can help deflect a knife edge(not a khukuri)and with the end of it,you can deliver an effective strike to any where around the head as long as you stay below the eyebrows and all soft parts of the body.
It works OK.

Thanks Ray. That makes perfect sense and is much better than the way I have been cleaning my blades when I get them really nasty which isn't to often.

Get well, Ray!

Out of curiosity, did you do your cleaning demo after Jim "inspected" your khukuris?

Your welcome Yvsa it is safe.
Hello Harry feels like some kind a flu.Took my wife two weeks now to start to feel some relief.I feel bad for Yangdu Bill says she's getting it.
Some one said something and I ended up asking how every buddy cleaned the blade and took out my stuff and started on one.

Harry are you suggesting that Tsimi may have drooled on Ray's khukuri's just a little tiny entsie bentsie bit?

I am sure I would've, but then I am very careful and sometimes wear a bib when examineing other's knive's, especially when there is a host of village khukuris like Ray must have since he has been with H.I. from the beginning pretty much.

There is just a certain appeal those
village khukuris have over the very beautiful shiny works of art that are consistent with the regular H.I.
line up.
And the nice 17" steel mounted villager I keep in our truck is one of my favorite's.
Kinda funny how so many different knives can each be a favorite not only because of their looks, but also they way the each work and hold an edge.
I may do a small karda and chakma for this particular village model as it deserves better than the ones that came with it. Perhaps even 2 kardas and an awl instead of the standard tools if there's room for 3 in the scabbard by putting much thinner leather to hold them in place.
I am gonna need to ge me some more "Morrocan Goat Skin" if I can find it as it is very thin, wears forever, and is incredibley tough, just like the thin water buffalo hide that's used on the khukuri scabbard's.
And it comes in any color you want as long as it's black, or at least that's been my expereince up 'til now.

Oh and Ray before I forget my manners totally I hope you get to feeling better
soon.
Ad when you do, if you see this and don't mind telling.................
How many village khukuri's do you have in relation to the Shop-1, Shop-2 and BirGhorka
model's?
And what would you say their averaage size is?

Many Thanks!!

Among those khukuris Ray brought was the Sherpa style made by old Kancha Kami. It is one of only 4 or 5 in the US and maybe the world. Rough and tough. Ray retired this one when he heard that Kancha had died. I don't have one!

Yangdu is still fighting the cold but as yet I have not come down. But, I had a cold a couple of weeks before the convention so may be immune for the rest of the season.

I would really like to see the Sherpa Khukuri someday and perhaps someday I will.
It would be really nice if someone could make an accurate model of it
and see if the kamis would reproduce it without any "improvements."
And even though there may be some similar it's always those we can't have that we want.
There's no end to our human foible's that seemingly always continue to get us into trouble.
