Hey everyone,

I'm pretty new to the whole EDC knife idea and want to start carrying a small folder for general cutting tasks (opening boxes, cutting wires at work, etc.) I read the laws online for Florida but they are so vague they may just as well not have them. Can anyone provide me with any insight into what the legal knife to carry is?

You shouldn't have any problems anywhere with just a regular pocket knife. It gets iffy when you carry something that looks like a self defense weapon or an auto. If you carry an auto you'd better have a concealed weapons permit.

With that said I am not a lawyer or know the laws inside and out. Some places you don't want to or can't carry knives or guns is federal buildings, period. I don't know of anybody or have I heard of any news reports where someone was searched and arrested for carrying any kind of knife. I have carried some kind of pocket knife for over 30+ years without the first hint that I would be stopped and searched. Once I just plain forgot and tried to enter our local court house for some business and I was asked to return to my car and leave the knife there. Otherwise I don't give it a second thought.

Now if you are on parole or the like maybe you would have problems.

Just be sensible and be safe........

Paul,

Thanks for the info. Right now i just carry a plane edge gerber ar 3.0. Nothing fancy, just a regular everyday use pocket knife. Now I do have a few at home that use torsion bars to open (kershaw speed safe). Are those considered autos?

it's not a matter of whether or not they are considered "autos" because (unless it's very recently addes) FL has no switchblade statute. what you need to be concerned with is whether or not it would be considered a "common pocket knife" because that's what the law allows (i hate that word) you to carry concealed. honestly, i think assisted openers are pushing the limit of "common".

the best bet is to obtain your concealed weapon permit, then carry whatever knife you want.
