Fluid film on boots?

Has anybody used Fluid Film to condition and protect their leather work boots? I have an old pair of boots that don't get much use these days but are still serviceable. They have always had a tough time holding a waterproof treatment (luckily the cabelas brand liner worked great- dryplus?) so I'm going to experiment on them and the recent snow we've received. Would be interested to hear how its worked for others...

To the best of my recollections, fluid film is lanolin in a petroleum solvent. So while the lanolin might soften the leather it wouldn't really water-proof it, and the petroleum might damage any of the synthetic liners, possibly the soles. I've had decent luck with bee'swax waterproofers, But I found that it was less making the boots waterproof, and more just for protecting the leather. I've owned several pairs of full grain leather boots that the uppers still looked great long after the footbed, sole and welt were destroyed.

There shouldn't be any type of solvent, not sure what propellant the aerosol uses but I brushed on the bulk form. Eureke/FluidFilm adamantly states it will not harm leather or rubber and can be used as a leather conditioner and "weather proofing" which leads me to the same conclusion about not actually water"proofin" like a beeswax or similar product would.

Might have to finally try some Obenauf's...

I've only seen the aerosol stuff. (fun note, my dad's gun cabinet still reeks like a wet sheep) Should be all good then.

This kind of leather boots have to be treated in two different ways.

Once a year knead the leather with a vegetal or animal grease. The leather is like a sponge, breakable when too dry, tearable when too wet. So once or twice a year, depending of the leather quality, is enough.

Once a month or more depending of the use and of the conditions (particularly when you walk in the snow) apply a coat of beeswax. That's what will waterproof your shoes.

Avoid any kind of solvant, it "dries" the leather.

Hope it helps.

Fluid Film is normally used on frames of trucks etc. to prevent rust. I didn't know you could use it on boots.
