Greenberg Woods made a post a few years ago about a fluxless cable damascus weld. You can find the post here,

https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/i-made-fluxless-cable-damascus.1505923/

Usually, resurrecting old posts with a new comment are frowned upon so I wanted to make a new post (and I can’t DM without a paid membership apparently).

Greenberg lauded to using chemicals to eat out the tar, etc. Anyone have any ideas on what the trick was? I thought I could soak the piece in Muriatic acid to clean it up and then use kerosene and a neutral flame for the weld.

Thanks!

Hey, i just found this.

I really dont recommend doing what i did, i was a very young and dumb chemistry student, and now im only a medium young chemistry graduate. What i did was INCREDIBLY dangerous and could very easily have resulted in serious physical and property damage. The chemicals i used in combination should not be used outsode of a lab setting with trained professionals.

If you want to make cable damascus, a good soak in acid, followed by a long soak in the forge, borax flux and tighenting before you weld will give you great results at a fraction of the danger.
