Hi All:

I have been watching people do aerials for some time and I wondered what it would be like to try throwing one into a target.

So I grabbed a worn China and headed to my indoor knife target ( which is made from soft styrofoam insulation )

I held it in a closed position by the tang and threw it over hand with a fairly good spin and after a couple of tries thunk into the target it went. Now if I can only do this every time I will be all set.

I wouldnt suggest trying this with a 42 or Jag because throwing will eventually break the knife. That is why I used a China.

Would be a cool act though

I like throwing knives, they're quiet.

on Clay's site he suggest holding the bite handle with the safe handle behind your shoulder, then throwing.

Balisongs aren't ment to be thrown. Clay showed his ignorance when he made a section teaching how to throw them. Clay's is still good but if you buy The Balisong Manual Imada says "Never throw your Balisong."

LOL.........Troll Alert!!!!

Did you even bother to read where I said the throw was used as a last ditch DISTRACTION??? Probably not.

Oooooooooooooo............... mister Imada says "Never throw". Well then, I better never throw. Yeah right!

I am with Clay.

Never throw?
Never say never.
I know that throwing will damage the knife I have been throwing for years and that is why I used a cheap knife

bm42a, that's a pretty Balls-ee first post...as well as a really creative username! Maybe we could try to be a little more positively constructive in future posts. I think Clay is quite knowledgable in what he does. So much so, that's he's created an entire website to help instruct others. See where I'm coming from???

BM42a,

Go jump in a lake! Master Clay is a key member in the advancement of the Balisong on this planet.

I'd say "go **** yourself" but the moderators would probably edit that!

I think in martial arts you have to listen and digest your GURU's advice before even applying or commenting on it!!

Since this is a modern era (read: e-era), our GURUs are in the form web-author that we read from and learn from .. in this context, Clay is MAHAGURU

Now, now, people. Is this any way to welcome our new friend? Yes, perhaps he came on a bit strong, but not without some reason. I haven't read any of Mr. Imada's stuff lately, but if he says don't throw, he probably has a reason. My guess is that Mr. Imada's reason is that throwing knives not made for the purpose often results in damage to the tip.

Knife throwing is very much an art unto itself. There's a separate forum for it here on bladeforums.com. I'm told that in the Philippines, throwing balisongs is not uncommon.

I think we are more concerned with the way bm42a said what he said more then what he said.

You don't just walk into a room and start bad mouthing people and not expect trouble.

As I said in the original post "I wouldnt suggest trying this with a 42 or Jag because throwing will eventually break the knife. That is why I used a China ( it only cost 5 bucks )"

I have been throwing for years so I feel that I know as much on the subject as Clay does on flipping balis ( not meant as a brag ) so of course I realize throwing will break a bali eventually.

But enough of that I realize that sometimes we get young people that are not yet experienced in the proper ways to conduct themselves so I am willing to give bm42a another chance if he apologises.

There was a time when people said going to the moon was a fanatical adventure not worth our time. I'm glad nobody listened to those people.

OK, maybe a dramatic example... but don't stand in the way of progress.

Though I agree with Knifesmith. A sincere apology goes a long way in this world.

The only succesful close to open throw I've ever done, stuck directly in the top of my foot. Wasn't what I hoped, but I always look on the bright side.
