Flying, Knives...Insurance?

flying back to NY for Thanksgiving tomorrow morning, bringing a few really nice knives in my check-in luggage. I know that luggage is randomly searched, I don't know if I can trust one of my beauties to get "lost" in the mix.

Should I be worrying?
I just want to show off my new knives to my little brother, maybe carve a little turkey - who knows - but I would like to travel without worrying.

As I understand it, you can be there while they check the luggage to ensure there is no hanky-panky with your belongings. Then they tag the bag as searched and you lock it with your choice of lock that doesn't have to be TSA compatible. You have to declare that you have to be present for the searching at check-in.

But that's not doctrine from the airline and TSA but what I remember Gollnick (member here) stating.

you can definitely trust one of your knives, or anything else, to get lost in the mix...happened twice to me...once i got my luggage on the baggage carousel, and it was wide open...i immediately searched it for missing items, including my SAK and balisong...SAK was still there but balisong was MIA...granted I didn't lock the bag, but i really buried it...whoever took it had to go to some trouble to fish it out...the claims process turned out to be more work than the knife was worth

second time, my whole bag just disappeared...never received it on the other end, and am actually still in the claims/reimbursement process for that one...had three hibben throwers, a Kabar, SAK, and another balisong...they weren't expensive knives, but they held some sentimental value for me...

moral of the story, don't bring it if u can avoid it...if u really want to bring it, insure it, and at least lock it up like a vault

I would mail it express via FedEx or UPS if you can't risk it and don't want to be without it. It'll get there the next day in the morning and should be about $30 each way.

When I fly I place my knives deep into a pocket of one of my pants then fold it and bury it in the middle of my bag. I have traveled over 25 round trips this year alone.
So far so good. I don't think the TSA is stealing maybe some baggage handlers so don't make it easy.
I hope I didn't jinx myself.

BTW
DO NOT CLIP YOU KNIFE TO YOUR POCKET IN NYC! YOU WILL GET HASSELED AND OR BUSTED. DEEP POCKET CARRY ONLY.
