Just wondering about something.

Looking at some FMA videos, and it seems that the Uddha swords from HI would make a good "crunch time" weapon. I don't know if they'd be too heavy or not.

Thoughts?

Just going on my limited research on the Uddha, there are two models:

#1: Full tang 23inches oal, blade length 17inches, 3/8ths inch spine, weight 30 to 32 ounces.

I own a 32oz Bura made Uddha which is in the above style. It is my favourite HI blade, bar none.

#2: Hidden tang, 23inches oal, weight 24ounces, 1/4inch spine, weight 24ounces.

Your question is kind of pointless, as really any blade can be adapted to FMA technique. Although the Uddha sword is nice, it really does'nt offer anything that is'nt already available in a number of Filipino bladed weapon designs.

The #1 as B.C. tagged it is a bit on the heavy side, but the #2 (which I wasn't around here to see at the time, d'oh!) is about 10 oz. lighter... now that one may have more of the speed one could use in a weapon.

I still wouldn't wanna be hit with #1 though.

Nah, it's really not pointless. It's asking if the Uddha can be used well in FMA, or if it's too heavy.

I didn't ask or imply if it could do anything that Filipino blades couldn't.

Except maybe look better. ;)
Especially one like this:

My oinion of the question being pointless is that in FMA "ANY" blade can be effectively used. FMA is all about developing techniques that can be effective despite the weapon, or lack there of. Given that most (not all) Filipino bladed weapons are in the same size and weight range as the Uddah it would then make sense that yes, it could be used for FMA techniques. That blade style is not unlike the Filipino Bolo and I have held examples of Barong that are heavier than 32 oz. Would the Uddah be adaptable to Kendo, or Kumdo, or Sabre Fencing? Probably not because the techniques are adapted specifically to the attributes of the bladed weapon being used.

An excellent, intelligent & informed post

I know I've said this before and I'll say it again:The Uddha looks like the "Khyber" swords from Afghanistan.

And frankly I'd not want to have somebody come after me with one :D

Yep, touches of khyber knives and salawar yataghans mixed together. Some days I find myself tempted to got out back and use mine on something for fun. So far it's relatively pristine... what to do?
