Does anyone know of any FMA schools or instructors in the Boston area? I'm not having much luck using the yellow pages

I'm looking for someone who teaches an FMA by itself, rather than as part of a JKD school.

Thanks,
Kevin the ChaosKitten

There are two instructors. Jack Bernard, associated with Pekiti Tirsia Internation al, under Tuhon Bill McGrath, teaches out of the Aerobics Factory out in Somerville, every Saturday from 10 AM. Jack teaches another class during the week around 6:30 PM but the class day changes depending on his work schedule. George Brewster, New England Representative of Lanada Escrima, was teaching out of the Boston Sportsman Club, but lost his space to the more profitable aerobics class. Mr. Brewster teaches on Sundays, 9 AM, in Peters Park on near the corner of Washington/East Berkeley Streets. He teaches several other days in a private home. He may have teaching space soon in Boston's Chinatown. This is not yet confirmed.

If you are looking for someone who is extremely well versed in FMA and Jun Fan Gung Fu/JKD, Muy Thai, and BJJ/grappling, you must meet my partner Guru/Sifu Jason Silverman of Executive Edge Martial Development in N. Quincy, Ma.. Jason is without a doubt the Real Deal.

Jason is a full instructor directly under Inosanto and Hartsell. In fact, he was Hartsell's East Coast guy for several years until he branched off to do other things.

He is a full instructor directly under Arnulfo "Dong" Cuesta and Dionisio Canetes in Doce Pares Eskrima, and also in Eskrima Corta, kali and LAMECO. He has competed in the WEKAF World Championships in Cebu City and was the coach of the US WEKAF team. His stick, knife and sword skils are scary!

He has studied BJJ extensively with the Gracies and has competed very successfully internationally as a shoot fighter.

He has trained with World Champion Muy Thai fighters and has competed successfully in that arena.

And, honestly, these are just a few of the things that he's done.

I've trained for thirty years in various arts with some world class instructors in the SF Bay Area. When I came to Boston four years ago, I was appalled at the level of MA's here- except for exceptions like Joe Maffy in Waltham. When I found Jason it was like a release from purgatory. He is the best martial artist for his age that I have ever trained with, bar none. And, just as importantly, he has no chip on his shoulders whatsoever. Nicest guy you could hope to meet. Likewise his students are all extremely nice and very dedicated. His senior students- both men and women- are all excellent fighters in every range of combat. I have a blast training with them. The training is very much reality/combat oriented.

That's it. Send him an E-mail @

Greetings All~

Just to clear up a few misconceptions regarding the above post...

My certifications include an Associate instructorship under Sifu Hartsell, though I am no longer affiliated with the JFJKDGA any longer.

Though I trained with Punong Guro Sulite, I was never ranked in his instructorship program.

True, I do hold an instructorship under GM Diony Canete and Master Dong Cuesta and competed in Cebu in 1998, I was not the Coach.

At our academy in North Quincy, Massachusetts, we direct our training towards the following arts: Doce Pares Eskrima, Jun Fan Gung Fu, JKD Grappling, Boxing / Kickboxing. In addition to our courses for LEOs.

Hopefully this will clear some of the air!

Good training to you all~

Jason

I sincerely apologize to Jason, ChaosKitten, and everyone!

Honest mistakes- I swear. The above was how I remembered it from when we first met long ago. Obviously the Alzheimer's has progressed more than I realized! Thank God I don't use my brain much doing medicine

. I clearly should have confirmed the details of his training with Jason before posting. Regardless, everything else I wrote regarding his skill level, his personality, and the quality of his students is absolutely accurate since I personally experience it week in and week out.

Again, my apologies to all.

Mario

K. and ChaosKitten,

Morning! Just a quick warning on Loki's list. He hasn't updated it since before I came to Boston four years ago. I know because I tried to use it to find a place to train when I first moved here- and many of those schools listed either didn't exist any longer or had moved and weren't in the Yellow Pages, etc., etc. Plus, Jason and other FMA instructor buddies that we know who actually do teach around New England have spoken directly to Loki up in the Great White North several times to get their schools listed and it has never happened. I guess Loki's just gotten too busy with other stuff.

Anyhow, Good luck in your search ChaosKitten, and even if you ever just want to come play with us for a day, we always enjoy trading energy with someone new. Just shoot off an E-mail to Jason or I and we'll arrange it.

Mario

Thanks for all the info, everyone. K, I'd already visited the site you pointed me to, thanks. I found, as Gaucho mentioned, that it is pretty out of date

Quincy is a bit of a hike from Watertown, but I'll be e-mailing Jason soon anyway.

The following is an excerpt from the "USA Locations" page of the http://www.knifefighting.com site. Hopefully one of these locations is near you.

The style is "AMOK" and is taught by Tom Sotis, who has trained closely with Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje. There's quite a bit more about AMOK and Tom Sotis on the site. I've taken several seminars with Tom and can report that he is an extremely skilled martial artist, and a very good teacher.

ChaosKitten,

Outstanding! We look forward to meeting you!

And please, I want to extend our invitation to come and train with us to anyone out there who may find yourselves in the Boston area for whatever reason. Whether you consider yourself a striker, a grappler, a stick, knife, or sword player, we don't care. Come and trade some energy- no egos, no bulls**t! I guarantee it. We learn from you, you learn from us. That's the way it should be- but unfortunately isn't much of the time.

After training for so long on the West Coast, I and some of my training partners over the years were able to develop a network of wonderfully skilled folks from many different systems who got together and trained. We had people from all over the world stop in and train with us when they were in the area. It was absolute heaven!

When I first got here and started looking for folks to train with, every place I went it was essentially, "That's not what we do here(threatened) so get out" or "Wow, we've been wanting to get into that, would you teach?" and most the instructors freely admitted that there was simply no place where they got together to train with eachother- everybody seemed to be at odds with everybody else.

Finally, I found Jason. He took what I knew, I took what he knew, and we just went on from there. That's the way it should be. And that's the way it is for everyone who comes to train with us.

Jason and I are really working to cultivate the same sort of open exchange of skills, and the remarkable eye-openning reality check of training/sparring with skilled individuals of different disciplines that I was lucky enough to have in the Bay Area.

So, again, if ever you find yourself in our neck of the Woods, COME ON BY! We'll have a blast!

Peace and good training,

Mario

Mario,

I take it you're in the Boston Area now? Your invitation is generous. What is the training schedule?

Sing,

Greetings! Yes, we are in Boston- well, the gym is actually in N. Quincy(see above address).

Classes meet:
Tuesday night- 8:00PM-10:00PM or so.
Thursday night- 8:00PM-10:00PM or so.
Saturdays- 11:00AM-12:30PM or so.

Please confirm the Sat. AM start time with Jason, as I hold office hours on Sat. mornings and don't usually get to the gym until noon. Jason and I- and occasionally Chris Hermann, his most senior student/instructor and all around great guy- stay afterwards on Saturday afternoons and train together privately for two or three hours. So, whenever you want to get together and train, just E-mail one of us and we'll do it.

Mario,

That sounds great. I like the exposure to different training partners. If I am visualizing right, your gym is near the State St. Bank Trust Complex and Super Stop and Shop, right over the Neponset River from Neponset Circle?

I won't be able to visit for the next several weeks, but soon after that. Will definitely contact one of you.

Hi-

I've trained with Guro Brewster (prior to his losing space in Allston) and am training irregularly with Jack Bernard in Somerville now. I can reccomend both of these instructors highly. I've learned a lot from both.

Barry

Hi Barry,

I been training on and off with Mr.B for several years now. I just started also getting together with Jack again. Maybe we'll run across each other at some point!

BTW, I talk to Mr. B yesterday. I booked him a space in the Quincy School in Boston's Chinatown for Tuesday and Saturday evenings, starting around 6:30 PM. He is going to start informing his students. If you want more info when it happens, email me.
