FMA in the Tacoma/Seattle WA area

I will be moving to the Kent, Wa area in a couple of months and would like to start training in FMA while there. Other than a couple of seminars I have no real training under an instructor so I dont really have a preference on systems or styles, except I would like something without a lot of kickboxing/grappling/JKD and more on conventional arnis or escrima . I would also like to stay as close to the Kent/Renton area as possible to keep commuting distance at a minumum. I know Kelly Worden is in Tacoma but does anyone know of any other groups or clubs?

Torokan,
You can't do better than Guro Chris Clarke in Federal Way. He is a Kali/Jeet Kune Do instructor under Guro Dan Inosanto and you can find his school address in the Kent phone book.

Is that the Chris Clarke that was in the Portland, OR area a few years ago and profiled in the first issue of "Full Contact" magazine? Federal Way is close enough but I would really like something non-JKD if possible.

Why not train with Datu Worden? From the things I heard/have seen about him, I suppose he´d be a heck of a teacher.

Guys,

Torakan said "except I would like something without a lot of kickboxing/grappling/JKD and more on conventional arnis or escrima."

I think this eliminates Kelly Worden as well because, as I recall, Worden has some JKD background. I think what Torakan is looking for and he can correct me if I'm wrong, is a more traditional FMA style.

Respectfully,

Dave

In fact I have given Mr Wordan's school some thought as I did attend a seminar by one of his students and own several of his videos.
However, I would like to concentrate mainly on stick fighting, of course that is not to take away anything from the those instuctors mentioned. I already have quite a bit of experience in karate, kenpo, judo, and Thai boxing and want to develop some stick skills.

I train in Doce Pares Eskrima with Guro Sherill Johnson at Ying Yang Arts Center in West Seattle. This has been my first month and I truly feel I've gotten every penny's worth. She's a great instructor, often has instructors and others visiting and helping run classes, and knows what she's doing. While she does have a background in other arts, her class focuses on Eskrima/Eskrido.

The "seminar" was by Corey Minatani from Moses Lake, WA. I've known Corey and his instuctor Jack Gibson for a quite a number of years and when I started to get interested in stick fighting I and some of my classmates from my Tang Soo Do class went down and worked out with them for an afternoon. So it was'nt really an actual seminar but more of a training session.

Yes, he's 'that' Chris Clarke. I dug thru my card file and you can check out his web site under Norhtwest Kali or e-mail him at chris@nwkali.com or phone 253-838-1414.
If you want a more 'pure' FMA, you might also try the Bellevue Martial Arts Academy. Punong Guro Myrlino Hufana is the head instructor there. The website is www.arnisador.com.

Torakan - cool, Datu Worden will also be doing a seminar at Punong Myrlino this Sunday with Roland Dante. If you know Jack then you may know Ken Smith as well who also lives in Renton I think. He may have some other avenues for you to persue as well.

Torakan, I second the recommendation for Chris Clarke. If you're in the area, and into FMA, you owe it to yourself to check him out.
