I think I may need an FAL, and have seen a few cheapies, but I'm leaning toward the DSA. Any suggestions? What do you have, and how do you like it? How is it grouping for you?

I can talk with you about most guns, but I know nothing about the FN FAL. Any help will be appreciated. Post pics if ya have em.

I have one. I LOVE it. It's the only non-duty gun I own (and the only gun I keep at home).

The DSA's are super sweet... but price reflective. A good deal on thie bare bones FAL's made from older parts is around $895... and that's a good deal.

I took used a Imbel gear logo recieved ($125) and a beautiful set of STG parts ($125)... had the thing assembled and cut to carbine leangth by a company in Arizona ($180 with the US parts added) . A buddy then did a parkerizing jub on it in trade for another parts kit I had, but it wasn't all that necessary. Looks good, though. It was all done to be pre-ban compliant and everything for under $550. Side by side to the comparable STG DSA, it's looks better than every one I've seen.

Same size as my patrol M4 (with the stock extended). Shoots GREAT! Low recoil and a big boom, too. I'm not a precision rifle shooter, but I can pretty much hit what I'm aiming at with it under 200 yards, no problem at all.

A really fun gun tha's a keeper in my book.

I'm photo-posting illiterate, but I'd send you some pics if you want 'em. Just PM me.

Otherwise check out www.falfiles.com. They have't updated the site in years, but there is a TON of info there to read and models to see. Also, check the "Old Site" link on the page... it takes you to even more stuff ont he FAL.

I used to have a Springfield Armory SAR-48. Probably one of the better FN-FAL clones made. I paid $600 for it brand new in the late 80s. I sold it for $700 about 7 years later. They now go for around $1,500-$2,000+, even used. I could really kick myself.

The gun was great. Very easy to field strip and clean. It was reliable and pretty accurate, and a lot of fun. It came with 5 20 rd mags.

DSA is the way to go if you have the money. You get what you pay for.

The Pre-Ban military clones that Springfield brought in are good solid rifles but, their prices are so close to a Belgian these days or a new DSA I wouldn't go that route.

Pre-Ban Belgian's hold their value well if you avoid the ocassional price spikes caused by proposed legislation and people you are impulse buying.

Myself, I have real soft spot for a Belgian Para-Congo model but, I'm saving up for the DSA version which is significantly cheaper since it now has a folding stock and not that welded open version.

With parts guns from any of the many places that made them or imported them, be careful. There are good ones and there are bad ones. I have seen a lot of inconsistency. If you find one reworked by Arizona Response grab it.

If you want a rifle that matches the classic Belgian FAL's of years past that is compliant with US law at a reasonable price, go with DSA. You get what you pay for.

FWIW, the DSA guys at SHOT were talking up their 16 1/4" Tactical Carbine models. They seem to have hit a sweet spot with that barrel and fluting for someone wanting a compact urban rifle.

This one has caught my eye as well.
