Can you give us a better idea of what "not too expensive" means to you? Also, what does your everyday use entail?

The quality/features jump between $50 folders and $100-$125 folders is pretty big, but there are solid knives at either point. I would (and do) spend the extra $50 for something from Spyderco or Benchmade, with Spyderco being my personal preference, the Wegner or Military models both right around $100, with lots of all around applications, and superb quality.

For fixed blades, I'm pretty sure that Fallkniven will be the consensus pick.

0351 They still have dragons?

So, yea we'd need an idea of what expensive is to you. What type of job you want the folder to do? Spyderco's give you a nice knife for the money as far as folders go.

As far as a field knife the SOG Seal looks like it could fit your needs in an inexpensive catagory.

Hope that helps. Semper Fi 0341

These aren't going to cheap but check 'em out anyway.

For a folder I would first recommend this:
SERE 2000
*Note-I have one of these knives and it is built like a tank. It feels real nice in the hand and came super sharp out of the box. The pictures simply don't do it justice.

For a fixed blade this came to mind because of you mentioning a the need for a more user friendly carry sytem than the Ka-Bar.
Camillus Cuda
*Note-I have no experience with this knife but, IMHO, it seems to be built with the "field" in mind and it also offers a convenient multi-position carry system.

I'd say 75 to 100 dollar range... as for the Dragon Question... they are becoming a thing of the past the new Javelin missle and TOWS are the ticket... Thanks for the help

Cold Steel Large Clip-Point Voyager, for the folder, will do you just fine. As far as the fixed-blade knife: Cold Steel SRK, or Bush Ranger.

As for the folder, well, I'll let others deal with that. As for fixed blade, why not a mini kabar? 1" shorter, but much less bulky. Also there is the Camillus Cuda fixed blade knife, which I love, that comes a great sheath for many kinds of carry. Also there is the mini Cuda fixed blade.
good luck

Okay, looks like you can do your shopping in one stop. Go over to the Camillus section of One Stop Knife Shop (AKA 1SKS) and pick up a CUDA fixed blade. Then swing over and get a CUDA EDC for your every day carry folder. It is inexpensive and good quality, just what you asked for.

You be stylin' then, Devil Dog.

For the folder I'd say either a crkt - maybe the m16, or a rekat pioneer II (my personal edc knife). 1sks has the pioneer II's on sale right now, so either of these knives would fit your requirements. I own both of them and they are both great knives.

One of the best bargains available out there right now has to be the Wayne Goddard LtWt. at Smoky Mountain Knife Works. $29.99. This is a full size folder with decent steel -- sorry can't remember what steel. Maybe ATS-55.

Then again, though the last time I looked Roger didn't have them up on his site at Bayou Lafourche, you can get the full size CRKT Apache for about the same price. This has an ATS-34 blade, and an aluminum handle. I bought a special edition full size Apache over a month ago, and few knives have felt so good in my hand. It too, is a big knife. I think the Apache II is available for even less, and it is more a medium-sized knife.

Roger also has the old model BM AFCK with M2 steel at around $70. Few people have much bad to say about that knife. If I weren't broke, I'd buy one for sure. May even do it anyhow. He also has the mini-AFCK for like $63. He has another knife that used to list for over $150, I believe, the Kershaw Random Task. Another knife I want badly, but can't afford. If you go to Bayou LaFOurche, look under the heading Closeouts.

One more knife, in addition to the Camillus EDC to consider, I think, if you like Tanto blades, is the Timberline Vallotten Discovery Lock. Shootist16 sells them for $45, I believe. An assisted opener, w/AUS8 steel, I believe, and an automatic, new lock. Not a liner lock.

Happy choosing,

If I could do it all over again:
Folder, Benchmade 710 or 710HS(little over $100), and fixed blade, Busse Basic 5 or 7 (around $150). Both are on the 1sks site. Of course neither was around 12 years ago

Of all the halfway portable toys I'd like to have for my own, the Mk 19 tops the list (sorry wasn't a Marine-though my dad was-Army 11H TOW gunner, 82nd AIR). Much fun.

Check out the Strider forum, under Makers/Mfger's, might interest you.

Folder: anything by Spyderco; fixed blade: Fallkniven F-1.

For a great knife for at an incredible value, check out the Outdoor Edge Magna (Zytel). 4 inch AUS8 steel, thick liners, solid lockup.

For a folder I would recommend a Spyderco with a zytel or G-10 handle. They are easy to carry (clip it to your gear or your uniform), extremely sharp, easy to open one handed, and LIGHT WEIGHT (I know you jar-heads--I mean "devil dogs" carry alot of heavy gear)!
Good Luck!

Hey thanks for all the help... I think I have narrowed my search... Anyone have info good or bad on Gigand knives?
Have found a fixed blade that I think will fit my purposes nicely. Now for the folder....
