Hello,

I have been reading the threads here for a while and finally decided to post. I am looking forward to my first HI product. I thought I had the 04/07 UBE deal wrapped up until I recieved the dreaded message telling me it had already been sold. I am impressed with how fast Yangdu responds to my emails. Now that I am on the hunt for my first khukuri, what do you guys recommend? I was thinking of a 18" WWII, M43, or AK. I figured i would get a villager as a user and a standard just to have and enjoy. I would also like to know if the Movie Model is still made.

Thanks,
10-35

The Ganga Ram Villagers offered here recently represent and excellent value. Also the WW2 Village models.

Welcome, NewGuy.

Can't help you with the availability of the Movie Model, but the 3 that you are considering are excellent choices. I've never seen an M43 as a villager, but the others show up often.

If you do get another chance at a UBE, GRAB IT. They are wonderful, especially if you get the scabbard replaced. I consider mine a user, and it chops mightily.

Remember: Use = Enjoyment.

HollowDweller's point about the village BGRS is also a good one. They are great little brutes.

The models you mention are great multi purpose knives and will really cut wood, as opposed to shorter ones.

Welcome.

Welcome to the Cantina/Psycho Ward 10-35.:D

I'm also very fond of the BGRS aka 18" GRS. It cuts like a heavier khukuri without having to carry the extra weight around. But you're looking at some good ones too, just a matter of personal preference.:D ;)

I'm torn between the GR and WWII myself but a M43 has a real different feel to it. The balance is different so just grab one of each and don't worry :D you'll end up with several anyhow.

If you get a villager in wood you might want to do a little extra sanding on the handle and finish off with a Watco oil treatment.....I think the steps are posted in either a sticky thread or just do a search on Watco. I'm in the process right now on my village GR......

but just go with what feels right.....and Welcome

Welcome, 10-35! Of course you can be a member, just as long as you can get along with guys that dig one legged dancing girls, ninjas, guys that adjust attitudes with ball pein hammers, cowboys, ndns, and a variety of other schtuff.

I don't think that the movie model is a regularly stocked item, you could email and see if they have one I reckon. The UBE is similar. Munk, you had one or both didn't you?

Totally off topic, this dude already scored a chiclet! WTF, took me hundreds of posts! :D

Steve, everyone starts off with one cactus worth 10 points.
That way if he gets dinged he isn't in the red immediately, that is unless someone like me does it.;)

Khukuris are multi-purpose knives. Any will probably do. They have different personalities though. Your best depends a little, on what you will do, how much weight you want, how big you are, how strong you are, if you like quick or hard, etc.

Listen to advice and suggestions, and then, most important, see what talks to you. I doubt you will go wrong.

Get the M43 to have and enjoy. It's a beauty, and it brings a smile to my face every time I pick it up.

If you want an HI villager, you can't go wrong with the WWII or the AK models.

Ah, thank you for elucidating Yvsa! Guess it took so long since there weren't no nicorettes back in the old days :D Why am I so fascinated with these tokens of esteem bestowed by others at least as insane as myself? I think I need to buy anothe kuk and settle myself down.

The Movie Model is something the Kamis came up with. They don't show up regularly, but you can always ask Yangdu to put in a special request.

As far as your first Khuk, the WWII and AK are bread and butter of the HI line. The 18" WWII does have some proportion issues, but still my favorite user. I think the AK is the knife that defines HI, an exceptionally useful blade, and a pattern the Kamis do very well. 18" AK is a benchmark khuk - necessary for any collection. The AK has a wider blade, will probably be a bit heavier, and make a better chopper, in general. Wide variation among models may negate this between any two particular blades.

16.5" WWII is a bit better proportioned, a bit lighter. Balance factors like your size, intended use, and whether you want to carry it in making a choice.

M43 is a different beast, with curving handle and blade-forward balance. Somewhat like the Foxy Folly, actually. Excellent lines, and a pretty choice. But definitely not a khuk to baby. If you can live with some scratches on the blade, no reason you can't use it by day, and display over the mantle by night.

Welcome to the Cantina!

Thanks for all of the replies. It looks like I was fast enough for the 04/08 17" WWII. In a few days I will get to try it out. I wanted something 18", but this one called out to me. Time will tell.

 That's a helluva way to start!!!! Beautiful wood, unusual handle style, by Bura. Good stuff.

My 17" WWII by Bura showed up today. I am a happy camper. I initially thought I needed something 18" or greater. I was wrong. The handle fits me and I am comfortable with the length and balance. One of the tools came unsharpened and my small son thinks it was made just for him.

Does anyone else see these as blend between tool and folk art? I do.

C   L!!!

I'm glad you like your first khuk. They are all special, but there is something about the first one that.......well that is until the next, and the next, and the.....well you get the point. :D

The unsharpened tool is the chakma I think, the rest will correct me shortly, and it is used in the field as a kind of sharpener. But your son will think he's just like daddy and that's cool too. :D

Definitely a cross between tool and folk art.
