I'm struggling to figure out some of the Busse shorthand and I'm hoping some of you can point me in the right direction. I know about the Busse Help Site sticky but there are some things not covered, and I'd really like some pictures to go along with the explanations. Is there a site or publication I can get to define some of the acronyms and show me what's being explained? I know that BM is a Battle Mistress, and I'm presuming that NMFBM is a Nuclear Meltdown Fusion Battle Mistress, but what the hell does the NM and F of that acronym mean? I was all prepared to purchase Moonwilson's CGFBM until I learned it's the one with the grooves on the blade (Lightening it? Making it less likely to stick in material being cut? Making it look wicked?) which I don't really like. What's the designation for this feature so I can avoid it?

BA is normally a Badger Attack (which I've recently purchased 2 of from members here) but what makes it a BATAC? Is an ABA a cousin of this knife or are they just neighbors which aren't related?

I know that LE attached to something means Limited Edition, but is this a way of saying a nice finish or is it a thicker/thinner blade?

On a completely different subject, if I purchase a Busse and want it refinished (I dislike the black crinkle finish and would like a satin or tan finish) can the guys at the Busse shop do it for me? Is there someone at Busse that does work on people's knives for a fee or do I need to find an independent 'smith who will do this? When I leave the butt end of the world where I am now (the coast of the Bering Sea, coordinates N 63° 01' 56.1" W 163° 33' 19.26" on Google Earth if you're interested) and move to a place when I can build a decent shop, I plan to put in a forge and some knife making equipment to try to do some of this but bringing things I'd need to do that work isn't feasible in a place accessible only by plane or snowmobile.

Please feel free to laugh at my Busse newbie ignorance. We all have to start somewhere, and laughing at the new guy is always fun. I'm here to learn, but since I'm already working on finishing my Masters degree I really don't want to search through every old Busse thread. I've enjoyed what I've found thus far and look forward to becoming a full fledged Busse nut.

Check out www.bussecollector.com, www.hogcult.com, and google "Busse, BadMojo".

A lot of stuff comes with just spending time here, but NM = nucleAr meltdown. Nuclear is just king of a buzzword often associated with the toughness of INFI. Meltdown refers to the rounded spine and pommel of the NMFBM and NMSFNO.

The tactical destination refers to a specific handle design (like E for ergo, F for fusion and SF for Special Forces) found on the BATAC and SJTAC. There are also other versions of the BA and SJ, which you will find on either of the sites I mentioned.

The bevels on the CG FBM make it both lighter and more rigid. They are referred to as CBT or corrugated bevel technology, and have only been offered on two knives that I can think of right now.

LE knives are indeed limited, and have designated numbers. They can be thcker than their cg counterparts (BATACLE) or thinner (ASHLE) but nowadays always come with satin blades, and magnum tigerhide micarta slabs in either canvas or linen, machined or hand-shaped.

Hope that helps. Welcome and good luck.

Gatman,
Which two knives are you thinking of that have CBTs. I can think of three plus one that has very subtle CBTs.

Rodger,

When ya come down in a couple weeks I can help you out if ya got any more Q's!!!

Do I need to re-think my position about these? Do they perform their function well? What say ye, who have a knife with CBT?

Ah...you're right. I was thinking of the Jack Hammer and CGFBM...but the Hell Razor has them too, no? I knew I was missing something, but I could only think of two then. :foot:

AKNativeSon,

I think that the consensus around here is that the CGFBM is one of the best knives you can buy, and a fantastic Busse blade. They are light and fast, but meaty enough to chop VERY well, and rigid, despite their thinner stock than the fatter FFFBM's and FBMSE's and FBMLE's. Truly, they may be the best chopper of them all for the price.

The mistress really is just a Busse staple. I think you'll love whichever one you get. The rest just depends on how much you'd like to spend, and how big your hands are.

I think the AK has the subtle CBT, unless I am mistaken. I have seen close up photos where they are apparent.

Doesn't the pork belly skinner have them as well?

I, for one really like the look of the CBT grind lines on the FBM combat grade. They look great. They look even better when you strip the finish off I think.

Great information from y'all, thanks!

If I have a Busse I'd like to have worked on, ground into a different shape and refinished, is there someone at Busse who can do that?

Garth, the resident grindmaster can probably do it, but there are also other options from here on the forum who do fantastic work. You could contact Ban, whose specialty is stoopid sharp convex edges; Randucci, who has done some nice regrinds and rehandles; and young Mr. Jeremy Horton (Horton Knives) who is recently showing himself to be a maker of possibly prodigious talent. Anyt of them wi probably get to your custom designs a bit quicker than Garth, who has to balance out grinding new knives with fitting in custom requests and modifications.

BFT: I do believe the PBS has CBT and I now remember reading refference to the AK's having subtle ones as well. Man, I am off my game today.

The AK was the one I was refering to as having subtle CBTs. I've never seen one stripped that had not received the Ban treatment so I don't know it the show up better once the coating is gone.

I had forgotten about the PBS also.
