Fog, Fatwood, Fungi, and.... a Face?

Finally got to go for a walk in the woods yesterday. No pack or kit just a couple of knives...couldn't make up my mind...and my camera and a few of hours of walking through the fog. I really didn't do much of anything but enjoy the walk and the peace....and gathered some fatwood. I was looking for oysters but no luck, maybe i need to try the river bottoms. The trees are starting to turn color up on the mountain. I'm not going to do much typing this time as most of the pictures need no explaining. Just look through and imagine the only sounds being that of rustling leaves in an occasional stiff breeze, a few birds chirping now and then, a couple of squirrels barking in the distance, and the ever present sound of drops of water hitting the leaves.

and I thought this was pretty cool. Is it just me or does anybody else see a contorted face in this tree? To me it has a Munchesque feel.

This is looking it in "the eye"

Man it sure was nice just to walk around in the complete absence of the sounds of civilization for a while.

Nice serene pics.

I havent found any oysters yet. Its usually late fall, when the leaves have dropped.

seems like a nice walk i often find my self on walks looking to take photos but end up just walking instead

Thanks guys, glad you like the pics. So I guess i am so far the only one who sees the face in the dead tree? It reminds my of the painting "The Scream" by Edvard Munch

Cool, then there is still hope yet!

Nope — you're not the only one who saw it, but you beat me to "The Scream" reference. Looks like a really nice walk.

Excellent shots Mistwalker. You certainly lived up to your namesake today hovering around in the fog. Love the filtered light that comes on mornings like that. The tree is pretty cool!

Great pics!

I dig the face. It definitely has that Blair Witch look. Great day for a hike, too - I just returned from a chilly, windy, and picturesque romp through the woods.

All the best,

- Mike

Thanks Ken, lol, I didn't get that as a nick-name for no reason. I have never been able to resist the call to the woods I feel when I see the mountain shrouded in mist. Back when i was younger I'd even skip school sometimes in the fall just to go hiking in the mist. Even now I will put off work when I can just to go hiking through the fog. There is no telling how many pictures I have from misty hikes.

Thanks Mike, I always love the somewhat "surreal" look the woods take on in the mist but I just thought that face in the tree added a little something special to this trip. I considered going and getting a chainsaw to cut it down and try to preserve it as a piece of art....I'm still thinking about it.

Oh man i love the fog love driving in it hiking or just sitting around the fire with a good jacket... Me see tree face.. Great pics bud.

I really did see it, Mist. Art is what I do for a living, and I've looked at almost all the great/famous paintings over the years, so I saw it right away. I didn't respond immediately because I'm working on something (the W&SS T-shirt, actually), and just didn't take the time to type.

Well, art was my main "thing" most of my young life. I used to carry my sketchpad everywhere I went. Now my sketchpad has been replaced by a digital camera lol. Mainly I was influenced by the old "renaissance" artists and Frank Frazetta, I may not recognize another Munch painting if I saw it but "The Scream" is one of those that just stuck in my head. As soon as I looked up at that tree I immediately remembered it lol.

Since you're working on the shirts can you find out if more patches will be available at some point?

Oh, man, I love Frank Frazetta's stuff. Maybe the best fantasy illustrator of all time. His women, while out of proportion, are great. If you've never been there, take a look at the illustration section ( http://www.dawsondoes.com/illustration_portfolios/illustration_portfolios.html ) of my site and click on traditional illustrations to see some of the old stuff I used to do.

Frazetta is my all time favorite artist. I had all of the books of his prints ever published...they spent more time in my back pack than my school books I think. Yeah...he did give me somewhat unrealistic expectations of women :D but I still love his work!

You wield a really mean air brush, and your P&I works are awesome.

Thanks, Mist. My airbrushes made me a lot of money over the years, and I had a lot of fun, too. I don't even own any paint brushes, air brushes or pens anymore. Nowadays, it's all done on a Macintosh, but I really do miss painting. Chicks used to dig it, too ;). I specialize mostly in 3D stuff now, but it's fun too.

I love the colors of fall changing. Can't wait for them to start changing around here, nice to see some pics of it

fog

The fog comes in on panther’s paws,
Splashing through the puddles as it lopes into the town,
Its hot breath hissing as it suffocates the valleys,
Sinking teeth into the silence as it wraps around the moon.

Muffling the lights and snuffling incessantly,
The ghostly panther pants as morning breezes rise,
The sun comes up, and people stir, mists vanish;
The panther’s supple shape dissolves before our eyes.
