Question
I've seen stainless foil for wrapping air harding steels during heattreat to prevent scaling.
Will this also work for oil quenching steels or will the foil layer slow the quench down?
Has anyone tried this?

Rex, I remove the foil wrap as soon as the blades are done heat treating and check for warpage. You got a bout 1 minute to fix them. I think you should remove the foil when the blades come out of the oven then quench in oil. Joe Mason

It works best on air hardening steels. You won't have time to unwrap it, straighten and quench before you lose critical temperature. The oil itself creates the scale you're trying to avoid by using the foil. I wouldn't use it on oil hardening steels.
Any more heat reat questions e-mail me. I do my own and heat treat for other makers as well.

Some times it works most of the time you get a potato chip.
The oil gets into the packet way to slowly and vaporizes causing heavy warping.
Keepbrite is better for oil quench steels and I use it for the tempering legs on 3Vand
420V.
You can get Keepbrite from MSC.
