hey guys... thought i'd just toss this one up...

you think a folding kuhkri exists?

if it does/did do you think it'd be practical?

what do you think could be the ups and downs to a folding kuhkri?

just kinda thought about this while chopping down some old hedges with my kuhkri.

thanks.

edit:

nvm i just googled "folding khukri" and found a dozen websites with em...

haha but still perhaps i'd like to invest in one...

anyone with experience with these babies it'd be much appreciated for some advice and first hand experience.

hm... I did the same search, and didn't get squat.

In any case, I don't think it'd be a very practical idea. The blades are substantially longer than the handles, first of all. In addition, the strength of the tool would be greatly compromised, especially considering the sheer mass of the blade.

I'd guess that a "folding khukri" would be more of a folding knife with an angled blade, more like a hawkbill with belly, than a "real" khuk. It would probably also require some serious thought to the handle, since the "traditional" short handle wouldn't work and also the the design of the angled blade probably complicates the handle. I'd worry about the strength of any folder that did chopping.

However, there are some really small khuks out there (e.g. the Himalayan Importan Bilton) that are "real" khuks (classic manufacture, style, cho, etc) so I'm sure they could be adapted.

I think I read in Blade magazine about some custom folding "khuk" although it was a relatively small blade, clearly not designed for chopping.

A khuk is a big hard use fixed blade, I don't think that making a folding version would be practical.

The closest thing I've used is one of those folding machetes that were issued to WWII pilots, and although it was a serviceable tool, I wouldn't want to bet my life on it.

It does exist in various forms by varying makers/manufacturers.

None are usable "as a khukuri", but as a recurve pocket knife.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing one, if someone could figure out a more stable lock (able to take a severe beating/vibrations) and make it large...as in, 7-9 inches closed. It would then be too heavy to really carry...or too light to use hard...

Best bet is to get a khukuri AND a folding knife. :D :foot:

thanks for your input guys.

pretty interesting discussion, i wouldn't mind seeing a folding khukri either...

as long as it could take the beating without snapping shut on me fingers ^^
