folded knife with blade longer then handle

I have been contemplating the idea of a knife with unique features for quite some time. It is clear that achieving such a concept is not possible with a solid one-piece blade. However, as an engineering college student rather than a knife engineer, I believe there might be some viable ideas worth exploring. For instance, a blade that is bendable and stored on a roll, a foldable blade, or even a telescopic blade could potentially work. Are there any existing knives or prototypes that incorporate these features? If not, I would appreciate it if you could explain why none of these concepts are feasible.

Welcome to Bladeforums Alex311.

Folding knives with blades longer than the handles have been around for a long time. Here are a few examples-

A German-style hunting folder. The knife is carried in a sheath.

And then there's this. A folder with an extension that covers the tip of the blade. This is a cheap example, but it is an old design concept. Often the extension folds back into the knife when the blade is open.

A Marbles version.

I'm not sure what you mean by "a blade that is bendable and stored in a roll", or a "foldable blade", or a "telescopic blade", but it seems to me that the purpose of a larger blade would be for some kind of hard use, and anything "bendable" or "foldable" or "telescopic" would prove impractical for such purposes.

But hey, there's nothing wrong with thinking outside the box. That's how we get innovation. :)

Check this one out...believe WValtakis WValtakis has one.

Always nice to meet a fan. I'm much more proud of my latest: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/collapsing-blade-mk11.1924951/

It's a project I took on after seeing how much the concept is romanticized in movies and other entertainment. Reduced strength is inherent to these collapsing designs, but I've used "springy" materials with high toughness so that the whole knife can deflect stress instead of trying to force the smaller components to remain ridged. The more practical aspect of the principal is that parts are easily replaced if damaged, rather than replacing an entire knife due to a broken tip, chipped blade, ect.

Matching the performance of tried and true pointy metal sticks may never be possible, but I still take every opportunity to improve the design. After all, how else is technology developed?

Don't give up so quickly .... For example, this is a recent unique design:

The designer was influenced by his love of Indian Motorcycles.

There is still room for new and simple/elegant with a single, one-piece blade. (Engineer myself)

As someone stated earlier, Marbles had/has one for years. The extention folded into the handle and acted as a blade stop when the blade was deployed. It covered the blade when folded. Welcome to the forum.
